Jeffrey J. Kripal
Jeffrey is the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, where he also hosts the Archives of the Impossible collection and conference series. He co-directs the Center for Theory and Research at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and sits on numerous advisory boards in the United States and Europe involving the nature of consciousness and the human, social, and natural sciences. Most recently, Jeff is the author of The Superhumanities: Historical Precedents, Moral Objections, New Realities (Chicago 2022), where he intuits an emerging order of knowledge that can engage in robust moral criticism but also affirm the superhuman or nonhuman dimensions of our histories and futures; and How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else (Chicago 2024), which thinks---with experiencers of the extreme--toward a future form of theory that does not separate the mental and the material. His principal work at Commonweal is with the Cancer Help Program, CancerChoices.org, the Omega Resilience Projects, the Collaborative on Health and the Environment, and The New School at Commonweal. He was the recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship for contributions to public health in 1983 and is author of Choices in Healing: Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Therapies (MIT Press).

In this conversation, Host Michael Lerner talks with author and professor Jeffrey Kripal about his book Kali’s Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna. This was a revised version of his PhD dissertation at the University of Chicago. It was greeted with acclaim in the West and with vitriol by Hindu fundamentalists. It begins Kripal's long study of homoerotic themes in world religions.

Rencontre jeudi 25 septembre 2025 autour du livre de François Robinne "Survie : une anthropographie de la dislocation et de la réparation (Birmanie)" publié aux éditions Mimésis.

À partir de récits de Birmans exilés ou restés au pays, François Robinne analyse les effets du coup d’État militaire de 2021. Il explore les notions de guerre intérieure, de respect, d’indésirabilité et de résistance, dans une anthropographie sensible des fractures sociales et des tentatives de réparation.

    Christian Lechervy : Envoyé spécial pour la Birmanie, ancien ambassadeur de France à Rangoun (2018 – 2023), Secrétaire permanent pour le Pacifique (2014 – 2018) et conseiller du président de la République pour les affaires stratégiques et l’Asie – Pacifique (2012 – 2014).
    Yves Goudineau est directeur d’études de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), qu’il a dirigée jusqu’en 2018. Ses principales enquêtes ethnographiques ont été conduites parmi des populations de minorités austroasiatiques, particulièrement au Laos et en Thaïlande. Il anime depuis 2005 le séminaire « Anthropologie comparée de l’Asie du Sud-Est » à l’EHESS.
    Michel Naepels est anthropologue, directeur de recherche au CNRS et directeur d’études à l’EHESS. Il déploie une anthropologie politique de la violence et de la vulnérabilité, à partir de deux terrains d’enquête ethnographique, en Nouvelle-Calédonie et au Katanga (République Démocratique du Congo). Il a obtenu la médaille d’argent du CNRS en 2022. Il a publié Histoires de terre kanakes (Belin, 1998), Ethnographie, pragmatique, histoire (Éditions de la Sorbonne, 2011), Conjurer la guerre (Éditions de l’EHESS, 2013), Dans la détresse (Éditions de l’EHESS, 2019).
    Tin Tin Htar Myint : Médecin birmane arrivée en France il y a 25 ans, co-fondatrice et présidente de l’association Doh Atu – Ensemble pour le Myanmar, engagée dans l’action humanitaire et la défense des droits humains. Elle œuvre pour soutenir les communautés affectées par la crise en Birmanie.
    François Robinne est anthropologue, directeur de recherche émérite au CNRS, membre de l’Institut de Recherches Asiatiques (IrASIA Aix-Marseille Université), ancien directeur de l’IRASEC Bangkok de 2012 à 2016, auteur de Birmanie. Par-delà l’ethnicité (Dépaysage 2021) et de Survie. Une anthropographie de la dislocation et de la réparation (Birmanie) (Mimésis 2025).

"En birman, l’acronyme Ma Aye Lo est un jeu de mots construit sur les initiales du général putschiste Min Aung Hlain et l’expression issue de l’argot « nique ta mère ». Ce 31 décembre, onze mois après le coup d’État du 1er février 2021, murmuré à l’unisson dans l’obscurité de la nuit, un retentissant Ma Aye Lo s’élève des fenêtres pour se répandre à travers le pays. Avertissement en quelque sorte à l’encontre d’une junte tout à la fois tortionnaire et paternaliste s’autoproclamant « père et mère de la nation » : « Min Aung Hlaing, tu niques ta mère », sous-entendu notre « mère patrie ». Pour en rendre compte, le choix est fait d’une approche multisite – en France, en Birmanie, en Thaïlande – auprès de déplacés, d’exilés, de réfugiés et apatrides. Regards croisés sur les notions de guerre intérieure, de respect mêlé de crainte, d’indésirabilité… ce volume offre plus largement une introspection des conditions mêmes de survie constitutives des migrations contemporaines et interroge la résilience d’une population « indésirée » en son propre pays."
