On Cliff's Edge was commissioned by the J.T. Lambert Intermediate School Combined 6th Grade Band, East Stroudsburg, PA, Matthew Whitney, director. The work is abstract with the two sections representing opposites like light and dark, happiness and sadness as well as detached and sustained. On Cliff's Edge is the imaginary line which separates these opposites much like the horizon between land and sky.

So, Fly is more than just a composition — it’s a declaration. I wrote this piece as an affirmation for young people to see themselves as powerful, resilient, and worthy of taking flight into their fullest potential. I wanted every note to feel like encouragement, every phrase like a hand on your back saying, “Go — you can do this.”

Musically, So, Fly is grounded in my love for both orchestral color and contemporary soul. The piece opens with an expansive, uplifting gesture — bright brass and woodwind voices that feel like sunrise on a city skyline. That light gives way to a slower, more introspective middle section, reflective and lyrical, allowing the performers to explore tone and depth. It’s here where the music breathes, offering space to feel before lifting off again into a final statement of resolve and radiance.

I envisioned this piece being performed by ensembles full of young people who are just beginning to understand their own voices — both musically and personally. It’s meant to challenge them, support them, and celebrate them. And for the audience, So, Fly is a reminder of what it means to dream, to grow, and to take flight.

Different Perspectives

One afternoon in early December, the temperature drops and the wind picks up, swirling old leaves around and round.  As dusk approaches, the air becomes still and the first flakes float lazily down, sporadic at first, then more regularly until surfaces become white. Snow falls throughout the night, giving the world a luminescent quality in the darkness. As dawn approaches, the clouds depart and sunrise reveals a gleaming, unblemished landscape, dazzling in its brilliance.

In South Korea, the first snowfall of the year is a significant event.  Known as "first snow," or "cheot-nun" (첫눈), it is a romantic and culturally meaningful occasion.  Many believe that it brings good luck and is a time for new beginnings.

Alive and Swingin’ is a vibrant musical composition that brilliantly captures the spirit of victory and overcoming. The piece celebrates the journey of conquering challenges, emerging victorious, and proudly declaring, ‘look at me now!’. It embodies the resilience of the human spirit, having not only endured but thrived, and being continually spurred on toward breakthrough. Ultimately, the piece radiates a contagious feeling of joy and vitality, inviting listeners to embrace a life that’s truly ‘alive and swingin’.

Christopher Tucker's (b. 1976) music has been heralded as having wonderful maturity, musical imagination, and sensitivity. He has composed works for chamber ensembles, chorus, band and orchestra. Tucker has begun to amass numerous awards in composition and conducting from organizations including the College Band Directors National Association, Phi Beta Mu, the National Band Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and ASCAP. He has received praise for his radio broadcast production and personality work while at WRR Classical 101.1 FM in Dallas, Texas, winning a Communicator Award and being a finalist for a coveted Silver Microphone Award. Tucker holds memberships in ASCAP and the American Composers Forum. He is the Director of Artistic Planning and a founder of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra.

Christopher Tucker earned a Bachelor of Music degree cum laude in Music Composition with a minor in Music Theory from the University of North Texas, a student of Martin Mailman. He received his Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin studying composition with Dan Welcher and Donald Grantham, while completing a Performance Certificate in Conducting with Kevin Sedatole. Other musical studies included masterclasses with notables Judith Weir, Lowell Liebermann, John Corigliano, Warren Benson, David Maslanka, Samuel Adler, Elliot Del Borgo and Walter Hartley, as well as additional work with Mark Camphouse, Timothy Mahr and Jack Stamp.

Christopher Tucker's music has been performed across the nation and all over the world including Japan, Germany and England. Tucker’s music is published by Southern Music Company, TRN Music, and C. Alan Publications, along with a large catalog of works self-published under the name Tucker Music Works.

Dani Maree Ashmore is a Melbourne-based composer and musician. Her love for music was nurtured during her school years, where she formally learned violin and cello. However, over the years she self-taught and performed with many different instruments including piano, guitar, electric bass, and percussion. Currently she enjoys both writing for and being actively involved as a percussionist with local orchestras and concert bands.

Her composition journey began as a singer-songwriter, performing her own music and writing songs for local musical theatre. After completing a Bachelor of Applied Music (Composition) at Box Hill Institute in 2014, she began specialising in writing orchestral music and film scores. Throughout her career, Dani has composed both original works and arrangements for various ensembles including wind bands and orchestras. Additionally, her music has been featured in short films, advertisements and music videos; many of which were competition finalists. Ultimately, Dani aims to write music that is both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to.
