In this musical adaptation, I try to mirror the poem's progression and the storm's shifts by introducing dramatic changes, vividly depicting the thunderstorm. This approach deepens the depiction, enhancing the audience's engagement with the natural spectacle.

BLACKPINK - JUMP "Outro Part" (weirdcrackmusic360_ Remix)

Commissioned by the Bryan High School Band in Omaha, NE and conducted by Daniel Abrahams, Above All Others is inspired by the meaning of the name “Omaha.” In his July 4, 1876, address marking the centennial of the founding of the United States, General Estabrook said, “And so we were and so we have been from that day to this, and so we are now, above all others in importance, on the stream, and so, aided by the same good genius, we shall ever remain.” The work is performed by the University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble.

Above All Others

Commissioned by Mark Trautman and the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, Elegy is inspired by 1 Corinthians 15:51–52, which beautifully conveys the mystery that surrounds the moment of death. "We shall all be changed — in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye … " Christians find the enclosing passage comforting because it speaks to the resurrection of the faithful. However, the excerpt speaks to a Universal truth. Each of us will face a great mystery, a moment of transformation. We will cross a boundary between life and death, and “in that moment, in the twinkling of an eye,” the world will be forever changed. Our only glimpse into this profound mystery is the death a loved one. Whether what happens after death is a resurrection or a reincarnation, or simply the continuation of life for the living, when we lose a loved one, these outcomes are tempered by the poignant, bittersweet emotion of loss.


Elegy for String Orchestra

Commissioned by Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Wilmington, DE, Bruce Barber, Conductor, Who Has Made This World is given in loving memory of David Lockart by his family and friends. The text is an adaptation by the composer of Job 12: 7–10. The recording is from a live performance by Christ Church at York Minster Cathedral in York, England.
David was a dear friend who also studied composition with me and sang with Christ Church. I was deeply moved and honored to compose this work in his memory. I wrote the tenor line with David's beautiful voice in mind and smile to imagine him singing along with this wonderful ensemble.

Joel Phillips taught at Westminster Choir College for 39 years. He is co-author of several textbooks in W. W. Norton’s Musician’s Guide series, including The Musician's Guide to Fundamentals, now the mostly widely used musical text in its market. His crowning achievement was becoming the 2015 Grand Prize Winner of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest [https://www.bulwer-lytton.com/2015], an international competition that selects from among thousands of entries the proposed opening sentence to the worst(!) of all possible novels.
