Sidelined: The US Department of Transportation created a report that recommended mandating truck sideguards to protect vulnerable road users from getting dragged and crushed. The truck industry was given the report, and pressured the USDOT to change its recommendation. Somerville Alliance for Safe Streets member Alex Epstein says the USDOT has been "captured" by the trucking industry. Alex is joined by Caron Whitaker, Deputy Executive Director of the League of American Cyclists, and Steven Bingham, father of a cyclist caught and crushed under a truck.

After four years of delays, congestion pricing has been given the green light, but now some city lawmakers say more money is needed to improve public transport. Today state legislators launched the “Get Congestion Pricing Right” campaign, which aims to cut down traffic and bring in more buses to an ailing system. In a snap election called ostensibly to decide which Ontario provincial party leader can take on Donald Trump, we sure have spent a lot of time talking about highways.

In this episode, we speak to Emma McIntosh, reporter for The Narwhal, about the various election promises made about highways in Ontario. Do we expand them, remove their tolls, or simply tunnel them under ground at an unimaginable expense? We break down what the party leaders are saying about solving highway congestion.

And, it's either the end of an era in Winnipeg, or the beginning of a new chapter. After over 45 years, the barriers preventing pedestrians from crossing the iconic downtown intersection of Portage and Main are coming down. We ask CBC Manitoba senior reporter Bartley Kives what led to this politically-charged change, and what it means for the future of Winnipeg's downtown.

Micromobility NYC, a Reddit group, organized protests which, with others, built pressure to "un-pause" NYC congestion pricing. Nicholas talks to the Reddit group's moderator, Miser, in the weeks before Trump declared he'd undo the policy (45:18).

In this episode, Nick Perloff-Giles sits down with Lewis Lehe, Assistant Professor in the Transportation Systems group of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at UIUC, to discuss congestion pricing's consequences, two months later. Has the toll worked in reducing congestion downtown? How might we measure that? And beyond simply reducing congestion, are there other benefits to this policy? This conversation explores answers to those questions, and probes further about the purpose of ambitious policies like this one.
