Francis Ngannou’s boxing debut was nothing short of incredible, and even though he didn’t get his arm raised in victory, many in the combat sports world felt he DID do enough to get the nod, but the judges instead scored it in favor of reigning lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The tally would see “The Predator” take a split decision loss—in his first boxing match!!—to the lineal heavyweight champion of the world. 

Of course John Nash had some thoughts on the entire extravagant night of boxing and its impact on the combat sports community. One thing is undeniable, Francis Ngannou is now a bona fide superstar who can command big names and big purses in boxing. He’s already secured a sensational deal with the PFL who acquiesced to his contract demands and now have the hottest commodity in all of combat sports.

Live Chat: Francis Ngannou's Future, UFC Headed to Trial?

Last week, big news hit combat sports media circles. Well, actually two things happened:

The UFC’s appeal to the antitrust case was denied by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

The release of every UFC athlete payout from 2011-2016

That release of the athlete payouts gave John Nash and Anton Tabuena plenty of fodder to go through, and the long and the short of it is that past reports by Forbes and other outlets greatly inflated the numbers of Conor McGregor’s payouts (by millions). 

We also got to learn how much Ronda Rousey and Jon Jones made during that time. There’s a wealth of information that can be read here. When comparing total event revenue with the top earners’ payouts, it’s easy to connect the dots and come to the conclusion that the UFC is raking it in and the fighters are getting the shaft.

We are also blessed with a great card this weekend with UFC 295 (what a totally clunky segue from the last paragraph!), so we decided to break down all five fights from the main card. Let’s take a look at those real quick:

Comparing real UFC payouts with Forbes' reports and our UFC 295 predictions

You read that headline right, folks. Conor McGregor, who was expected to headline UFC 300 (never official, though) is no longer on the card according to his longtime coach John Kavanagh. In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Kavanagh revealed the UFC was the decider in this latest delay of McGregor’s return to action.

We took a look back on the incredible card that was UFC 295 and we looked ahead to UFC Vegas 82—just kidding! That card is a whole bowl full of Apex nothingness so we only predicted the main event there. What we DID do was pick five fights from Bellator 301, a far superior event.

Conor McGregor no longer on UFC 300 card

Well, after a week off from UFC weekend content, we’re back to the grind. We’ve got a very nice event this weekend in UFC Austin, so we selected a quartet of contests that we feel are the most important ones. Here’s the bouts we predicted:

Finally, we welcomed back Tim Bissell for what will now be a regular feature during Sumo tournament season (tournaments are every two months and last 15 days each). We call it “Sumo Stompin’ with Tim Bissell”. This week, Tim gives us the wrap up and final results from the year-ending Kyushu Basho.
