I was in a relaxed reflective mood when I created this instrumental. Hopefully it has the same effect on you.

Reflections

“Embers” is a neoclassical piano and cello piece that explores memory, loss, and quiet solitude. It begins with a simple piano descending line and slowly grows into a full, emotional dialogue between piano and cello — before fading back into stillness.

The piece was inspired by reflections on family, time, and all that lingers when everything else has passed. It’s not about sadness so much as remembrance — that faint glow that remains when the fire of life burns low.

Performed by cellist Eddie McLean, “Embers” blends classical expression with modern cinematic sensitivity, creating space for reflection and stillness.

It would be a beautiful fit for playlists that feature Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, Joep Beving, or Ludovico Einaudi — and for themes of calm, melancholy, and contemplation.

This melody was in my head when I woke up, which means it's either some sort of cosmic premonition, or I have unwittingly heard it somewhere. Sort of kind of anthemic I guess, definitely retro (as usual), but something I have enjoyed making (as usual). If you enjoy the listening, do please let me know - it would be a blessed relief to hear from a real person using actual sentences of their own creation. I digress, enjoy!

The only love
I can accept
is the purest one,
straight from the well.

Not born from 
desire, hunger,
wounds unhealed,
unbearable loneliness
echoing.

A love given freely
by your overflowing heart -
not begged for, 
not lured from its cave,
not softened 
by foreign tears.

A love
not asked for -
only hoped for.

I just sit here,
outside your door,
hair let loose,
cheeks kissed by sun
and a gentle breeze,
heart humming.
Sitting in the centre
of my world,
I whisper:
I’m here.

Just a whisper
knocks on your door.
You’re the gatekeeper,
the one and only king 
of your world.

I’m just telling you
that the day
is glorious -
for a stroll, a chat,
for play or dance outside.
Or for totally merging
for a while.

I will take
only what is given
out of freedom
and love
distilled of gross
impurities.

Never will I beg,
demand –
pure love knows no threats.
Nothing that you offer
can wound me,
just deepen
and grow my light.
The nectar, the barriers –
your presence, your silence. 

My offering to you –

I have been creating music since my misspent youth. Every song has a story.

I started with sample based tracks via Dance eJay and Acid Music on my x486 PC, the output from which I would describe as interpretive.

My first writing from scratch started with the glorious Yamaha RM1x and subsequently the Yamaha RS7000. With limited responsibility and seemingly endless weekends, I found the creative spark.

I have diddled a bit with my Teenage Engineering OP-1, Novation Circuit and Korg Electribe 2 (see tracks for evidence), and I briefly touched the Native Instruments Maschine MK2 but I didn't have the PC power to run with that.

Once Akai announced the MPC Live, I was positively salivating and purchased on release.

It has always been about an all in one box solution for me, and now I am only limited by my own creativity and precious free time (thanks, kids).

I write things that I like to listen to, but commercial music this is not. I could see my music in a game, artsy video or fever dream.

At least, when it's all done, I can say that I made some nice noise, even if nobody else thinks so.
