Mental Splinters

A long meditative/contemplative recording made from the interior of a cliff-top rock cave facing the Southern Ocean (nothing else other than ocean between here and Antarctica).

This was, for me, a deeply significant meditative/contemplative recording experience. I last visited this place 39 years ago. At that time, I respectfully crawled on my belly through the narrow space beneath one of the largest of the standing rocks. Although I could still have managed that exercise, I preferred, this time, to sit in motionless silence inside the wind and sea-spray carved cave space of another rock facing the turbulent ocean. It was late at night, and although the sky was overcast, the waxing moonlight filtered through the clouds and subtly lit up the entire landscape and seascape. I could even see, quite clearly, inside the cave space itself.

My meditative contemplation was primarily focussed on an all-embracing theme of ancestry and consciousness. These rock formations have evolved and been sculpted by temporal geological forces over far more than 200 million years. Time itself, I have realised, is the only true and permanent 'millionaire'; and its only true and permanent wealth is nothing other than the history of time itself - a precise history of pure incessant impermanence. Remnant carbon deposits on the ceiling of the cave suggest prior human habitation. For still uncertain reasons, archaeological evidence shows that indigenous people ceased living on this island approximately 4000 years ago, even though numerous archaeological sites demonstrate an extended and extensive period of human habitation prior to that time.

The recording was made with a pair of MKH 8020s in AB 34 cm pointing towards the back of the cave and tilted upwards to where the cave's back wall and erosion-scalloped ceiling merge in a smoothly continuous curve, with analogue preamps set to 55 dB. The recording is essentially unprocessed.

Recorded on land and water which, although not indigenously inhabited for some 4000 years, remains to this day of fundamental cultural, spiritual and historical importance to the mainland Narangga, Kaurna, and Ramindjeri/Ngarrindjeri peoples.

The photographs of the recording site were taken the following morning. Nominal location: 36°02'54.0"S 136°45'26.2"E.

John Tabacco is an American composer, singer songwriter, producer, recording engineer, multi instrumentalist and graphic artist. He has engineered /mixed and mastered music for hundreds of New York recording artists as well as projects released on BMG: The Kemelions, RCA: Faze, Rampage/Rhino: Rhett Forrester, Columbia: Rebbie Jackson, Rykodisc : Bob Marley, Columbia: Chris Jasper, Electra: Sonia Dada and Nickleodeon’s Are You Afraid Of The Dark? He is the CEO of It Iz What It Iz Music Publishing which currently holds over 600 songs in its catalog. He has been an associate producer for IndiMusic TV and hosts a bi-weekly radio program (CLAM RADIO) on college radio WUSB.fm since 1999.

His musical background consists of extensive study of orchestration with noted 20th century composer John Lessard, harmony with the late electronic music maverick Bulent Arel, and composition with Stony Brook University professor Peter Winkler. He received his BA in Music from Stony Brook University in 1983. 

Like an unfolding musical diary / puzzle, Tabacco’s music and art are constantly being re-worked, juxtaposed and intertwined. His style is a melding of pop - jazz -rock - avant garde / aleatory, classical and comedy.  He has been recording his music non stop since 1979.

Of note: In 1989 the satirical, absurd house song "Go House Yourself" co-written by Tabacco, Pati and DiMauro reached position 39 on Billboard's dance chart. 

In 2014 Tabacco signed a record deal with Texas, indie label, Muffin Records. They released his CD “Unfulfilled Shopping Carts Syndrome” internationally.

Selected music & sound-art works by *Hypnomancer, (David Stout) - sonic artist, composer and songwriter. Hypnomancer is a musical shape shifter exploring the world of hybrid sound cultures blending a wide array of genres including ambient, noise, world fusion, alt-country, acid jazz, folktronica, underground hip-hop, IDM, Dub, experimental electronics, minimalism and other contemporary classical musics. His compositions, songs, and film scores are produced with a variety of instrumental approaches including, modular synthesizers, field recordings, folk instruments, generative AI and virtuosic guest instrumentalists.

Early Work:
His earlier works explored the fusion of electronic image synthesis, visual art, music and theatre. During this creative period Stout composed many scores for dance, theatre and film.
