The piano is not prepared, most actions are performed inside the instrument and on the performers' body itself, using hands, arms, feet, superballs, keys and marble eggs.

The composition has been performed during my stay in Darmstadt as a guest composer and is written using the HN System® which I developed in the early 1990s.

The HN System is a system of techniques for composition, notation and performance based on the parameterisation of the performing process.

Sempre più ampio il mio sguardo fisso alla morte (1994) | Piano four hands

Lilias tells the story of a woman accused of witchcraft, tortured, shaved, stripped and sleep deprived, she died before she could be burned to death. As consequence, she could not be buried on consecrated ground and thus was buried at the shoreline of Torryburn bay under a slab of stone to prevent her from returning to torment the living. Her body was later uncovered and pieces of her skeleton were sold as souvenirs or displayed in exhibitions. The whereabouts of her skull is still unknown. 

My semi-improvised work explores Lilias’ soul in a state of eternal unrest. Her story, with phrases taken from her confession and the names of other women accused of witchcraft, is fragmented to signify her forever displaced body and emulate the hysteria and purgatory caused by her sleep deprivation.

Beschreibung der Komposition "Das Anheben einer Augenbraue vermittelt mehr als hundert Worte".

Charlie Chaplin: Action is more generally understood than words. The lift of an eyebrow, however faint, may convey more than a hundred words.

Die Idee für die Komposition basiert auf diesem Satz von Charlie Chaplin. Manchmal ist die Bedeutung der Worte nicht mehr wichtig, der Klang ist die Botschaft. Für mich als Komponist klingen Sprachen auch wie Musik. Wenn man diese Sprachlaute mit Musik unterlegt, ergibt es etwas Neues.

In diesem Stück lasse ich den Satz von Charlie Chaplin - obwohl er hier frei interpretiert wird - von Kindern mit verschiedenen Muttersprachen (Japanisch, Koreanisch, Chinesisch, Kurdisch, Ungarisch, Spanisch, Arabisch, Russisch, Polnisch) sprechen. Einige Teile wie "Anheben einer Augenbraue", "kleine Bewegung", "Geste" oder "100 Worte" lasse ich einzeln sprechen. (Übrigens: Das japanische Mädchen benutzte das englische Wort für "Geste", "Tango" bedeutet "Wort" auf Japanisch).

Der erste Kompositionsschritt bestand darin, diese Sätze in eine kompositorische Ordnung zu bringen. Basierend auf meiner ästhetischen Vorstellung. Ich habe nicht darauf geachtet, ob die vollständigen Wörter/Sätze noch zu verstehen sind. Dennoch war es wichtig, dass Rhythmus, Sprechtempo und Melodie erhalten blieben. Mein Ziel war es, ein gleichbleibendes Metrum zu finden (es stellten sich ca. 70bpm heraus). Dies ermöglichte einen konstanten Fluss in der gesamten Produktion. Das Tempo der Sprachen ist ausschließlich original. Es gab keine technische Manipulation in irgendeiner Weise. Die Tonhöhen für die Klänge ergeben sich oft aus der Basis der Tonhöhe einzelner Kinderstimmen. Ich habe diese Tonhöhen hauptsächlich in anderen Oktaven verwendet.

Der zweite Kompositionsschritt bestand darin, Klänge für die fertige Wort-/Satzkomposition zu erzeugen (ausschließlich mit Geige/Viola und Effekten). Ich habe diese Klänge und Worte dann wieder nach ästhetischen und kompositorischen Gesichtspunkten kombiniert. Dabei habe ich einige sehr harte Schnitte für die Sounds verwendet. Harte Brüche bedeuten etwas in der Sprache - auch in der Musik können sie zu Irritationen führen.  
Das Ergebnis dieses Ansatzes ist im ersten Teil zu hören.

Der nächste Schritt war die Komposition einer Live-Stimme für Violine solo, die auf der Grundlage des 1. Teils erstellt wurde. Grundlage waren wieder die Grundtöne der gesprochenen Worte und spezielle Rhythmen, die entweder von den Sprecher*innen kamen oder durch den Mix aus Sounds und Sprache entstand. 
Im zweiten Teil ist das Ergebnis des Soloparts zusammen mit den Klängen zu hören, erst am Ende kommen einige Stimmen (Duette, Trios) hinzu.
Im dritten Teil erklingt der erste Teil zusammen mit dem zweiten Teil.

Composer, performer, teacher and designer of musical instruments.

His training includes composition studies at the Milan Conservatory, musical analysis and electronic music at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan, advanced courses in Europe, studies in the field of theatre and performing arts.

His works combine music composition, performance art, sound sculpture, and have been presented in Europe, the United States, China.

In the early 1990s he created the HN System® for the composition of physical, mental, emotional performative processes.

In 1994 he was a lecturer at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, where he presented the HN System, defined by Heinz-Klaus Metzger as «the most surprising artistic invention of the last 15 years».

He designed the HN Percussion®, musical instruments that involve the performer’s entire body.

He conducts workshops at conservatories and universities.

His music is the subject of academic papers, theses, documentary films.
