Archæan, derived from the Greek word for beginning, refers to the era hosting the earliest formation of life on Earth. Taking inspiration from Hepworth's sculptural portrayal of this era, my piece explores concepts of emergence and transformation.

Tethered Sentiment explores the notion of unhealthy attachment and its
implications of nostalgia, dependency, and constraint. In navigating the delicate balance
between inner turmoil and external appearances, the piece seeks to
illustrate the allure of familiarity and the beauty of resilience found in
moments of brokenness.

Wandering was written in collaboration with Mark O’Keeffe as part of the Red Note Solos series. The piece emulates a free-flowing thought process, unfolding organically and unrestricted by any predetermined direction or destination.

Driftwood is inspired by a seascape, using the warm, mellow timbres of wind instruments to depict a pastoral, rural setting. As the title suggests, the piece is representative of a transformative journey, weathered and shaped by the experiences it endures. The six contrasting movements follow a narrative arc from the initial excitement of departure, through stormy periods of unrest, to the ultimate calm of returning to the safety of the shore.

Leviathan

"Inner Harmonies" can be seen as a declaration of love to the coastal regions of Liguria in northern Italy, to these landscapes and the sea, to the attitude to life and to the numerous quiet places that can still be discovered even in this region often characterised by tourism. The album tries to capture the essence of this landscape and its moods, and plays with the contrasts between the sea and the neighbouring mountains, which are fascinating in every view of the scenery.

"Inner Harmonies" consists of five long instrumental tracks that lead the listener into a colourful sonic frenzy of ascending and descending sound sections and repetitive structures in which individual instruments temporarily come to the fore and then dissolve again. Like minimal music meets ambient and contemporary classical music, interpreted in a subtle and sunny, light-flooded style.

This piece explores the dichotomy of solitude; the tension between its opposing qualities of independence and isolation.

Solitude

Wes Becherer, oboe, Calvin Rice, clarinet, Nick Graham, alto saxophone Asher Howell, bassoon, Dexter Hidalgo, bass clarinet. Mutation was written for Nonesuch Reed Quintet as part of their call for scores. It starts with a single motive, played in the oboe, which generates all of the melodic material for the rest of the piece. We see the motive twisted and changed slowly over time, until it is unrecognizable by the end. We also see the piece itself change in a similar way to the theme. It starts with monophonic textures and develops into more complicated contrapuntal ideas. The piece’s trajectory is a steady increase in energy until the very end.

Australian composer, born 1960, married to Clare Maclean (New Zealand/Australian composer). The first series of paintings used on my Soundcloud sight were by my father, Barry Carroll. I have used other painters since then. There is a wide variety of music here: recent compositions, pieces written in my thirties, student works, and pieces written in my teenage years. Soon after I started learning piano I began composing. At university I studied with Peter Sculthorpe (1978-81) [and earlier, with Martin Wesley-Smith, Moya Henderson and Eric Gross]. My style was modernist (In Terra Pax, Sonata for Two Pianos and Horn, Qui Tollis). After my studies I felt drawn to tonality. Many of my pieces were written during my thirties. My style is often tonal, sometimes using the structures of classical music, sometimes incorporating traditional melodies, aiming to express a sense of the timeless goodness in existence. I became a pastor. There was a twenty year exile from composition, during which time I started writing poetry. 

In 2018 I began composing again. Over 1840 new works have been written, each one canonic - using Plainsong, Jewish cantillation, Scottish pibrochs, Icelandic music, early transcriptions of Aboriginal music, Breton and Northumbrian melodies, Gaelic psalms, Irish and English tunes, Welsh folk songs, and my own melodies (and an extended series of works that accompany paintings) "joining our voice to a great communal voice that calls out across the centuries" (Ben Myers). Bruckner greatly influenced me when I was young. May I also create melodies that "arc from heaven" (Colin Davies).
