This piece commemorates the 45th anniversary of the end of the Cambodian genocide.

This piece is dedicated to the victims of the Cambodian genocide. My interest in war and genocide has brought me to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and the Unit 731 museum in Harbin, China. But I will remember Cambodia as a truly life-changing experience after revisiting the horrors at the Choeung Ek Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.

In 1975, the Khmer Rouge invaded Phnom Penh and won the Cambodia civil war. The Cambodian genocide, which lasted 3 years and 8 months, saw the systematic murder of between 2 to 3 million Cambodians. Intellectuals were immediately targeted for torture and execution - lawyers, doctors, teachers, musicians, scientists, engineers, etc. Ethnic minorities were also targeted. Money, private property, and religion were banned.

In the first section, a bird stands alone in the killing field. The inverted melody of the folk song "Sarika Keo Euy" is presented. This famous tune sings the praise of the sarika keo - a common starling bird. Guitar shock chords (formed from tritone and perfect 4th) gradually morph during healing. In "Awakening", the bird takes flight as depicted by the shimmering effect on the flute. Now, there is hope for peace. The timbre changes with the guitar harmonics and flute bisbigliando effects. In "Congregating and Healing", the survivors congregate and pray for peace. 45 years after the end of the genocide, Cambodians continue to heal and rebuild their nation.

Irish Classical Guitar Duo

Éire Guitar Duo unites RIAM graduates Oscar Montague (guitar 1) & Santiago Kodela (guitar 2).

They commission and premiere bold new works alongside modern classics, pushing the duo repertoire through recordings, videos, and live sets from festivals to alternative spaces worldwide.

Giorgio Colombo Taccani was born in Milan in 1961. He pursued a classical education, graduating from the University of Milan with a thesis in Music History devoted to Bruno Maderna's Hyperion.
At the same time he also studied music, earning a degree in Piano and in Composition at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan, studying with Pippo Molino and Azio Corghi. He subsequently earned a diploma from the two-year advanced program in Composition taught by Franco Donatoni at the Santa Cecilia Academy of Rome, where he won a S.I.A.E. fellowship; he also took advanced courses with Azio Corghi and György Ligeti and in 1995 was chosen to attend a Summer workshop organized by IRCAM and dedicated to electronic music.
Colombo Taccani's music has won awards and honorable mentions in competitions of both national and international scope, has been regularly presented in concert seasons and music Festivals, has been broadcast by National Radios, and is published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni, Milan.
Since 1991 to 2001 he has been working with electronic music at AGON acustica informatica musica. 
He assisted Azio Corghi during the advanced course of Composition at the "A. Toscanini" Academy in Parma. Since 1992 to 1999 he taught Composition at the "Civica Scuola di Musica" in Milan. 
Since 2005 he collaborates with the Conducting course (that focuses primarily on contemporary repertoire) taught by Giorgio Bernasconi and Arturo Tamayo at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano.
He teaches Composition at the G. Verdi Conservatory in Turin.

Valhjim is a music composer with an eclectic approach to different genres: rock, pop, folk, New Age, and experimental electronic music. Greatly driven by imagination and poetic imagery, he combines multiple instrumental textures to fire the imagination of his listeners. 

His more experimental ambience and electronic music is built with layers of suggestive sound textures, rhythms, and melodic lines that stir the imagination into suggestive imagery and worlds unseen, true architectures of sound that open up limitless spaces to explore. Often Valhjim's melodies sail through genre thresholds, crossing over from one genre to another, from neo classcal to electronic, or from jazz to rock or new age.
