THE STORY

I took the challenge as being "In what interesting ways can I process these samples + vocal samples, going a little beyond just  vocoding or convolution? Speech must still be intelligible.

Years ago, a friend that is part of an online radio (The Global Voice) asked me for short sentences introducing their radio in different languages, which I managed to get from volunteers from the Freesound.org website.

The Global Voice are still using those samples. I thought it would be a great idea to create some twisted versions that they could use to update their set.

My submission is a 'proof-of-concept": testing various voice processing chains. The results are split into sets, a short beep marks the start of each set. Below the technical details.


TECHNICAL DETAILS

Set 1 - Each sample contains female and male voices. First sample is unprocessed. This set uses convolution with a portion of challenge sample #9 as impulse response (IR). Some avriety of effects can be obtained, including a reverse reverb effect. In some cases the IR was a manipulated sample (e.g. pitch sweeps)

Set 2 - First sample is unprocessed. Exploring vocoding using a pitched sample (piano) and a noisy sample (train). The first processed samples are just straight vocoding examples, in the next 2 the vocoder modulator (voice) has a FM effect applied before going through the vocoder. In the next 2 samples the FM effect is applied to the carrier sound instead.

Set 3 - Using a plugin that allows mixing/combining 2 signals in different ways. The challenge samples used were white noise and the train sound. The same voice is processed twice with the same settings against each of these samples. With the settings used can sound like a short-wave radio struggling to tune in to a signal. 

Set 4 - The previous samples gave me an idea: this way of combining 2 signals was producing a very noisy output. What would happen if this signal was then put through audio cleaning algorithms?
As with the previous set, voices are processed with the same settings in pairs. The first 2 examples in this set use the same settings as the last voices of the previous set. Then a more extreme setting is used, making the speech barely intelligible.
Next 4 samples: cleaning with Izotope RX. Next 6 samples: cleaning with Waves Clarity cleaning (at 50%, 75% and 100%). - very unique distorted sound!

Set 5 - Inspired by the previous set. Blended the last vocal transformed sound with the original vocal. Next samples these transformed vocals through a guitar pedal for brutal distortion.

Set 6 - First, straight vocoding. Then the vocoded signal is processed through 2 versions of Convolution.

Set 7 - All sounds are voice samples ring-modulated with challenge sample #4 or processed versions of sample #4.

Set 8 - In this set, LFOs are used to blend between 4 different challenge files being used as IRs.
