William Stephens came to Cornwall’s Clay Country originally to work as a gardener for the Carlyon family at Tregrehan near St Austell. William was called to preach the Gospel and joined the bourgeoning Methodist Church which was especially popular in Cornwall. He established a makeshift chapel in a wooden barn but it was clear that he needed a more permanent home. He started collecting money for the building works but had caught the attention of some visiting Oxford students, not fans of the new Methodist Church. They conspired to rob William of his funds, disguised themselves and set off under the cover of darkness. 

What they hadn’t planned for was William’s steely character. When they entered into William’s house they found him sat up waiting for them in his dressing gown and night cap! At his side was a huge pile of black powder and in William’s hands, a flint and steel. William assured the robbers he would not hesitate to create a spark and blow the entire house up if they came any closer. He went on to relieve them of their own money and to make them sing the 100th psalm whilst they were there for good measure. William now had the funds to start work on the new Chapel. What the robbers didn’t know was that keen gardener William’s black powder was in fact his year’s supply of Leek Seed! William didn’t quite live to see the opening of his Chapel in 1824 but his legacy lives on with the chapel’s name ‘Leek Seed Methodist Church’. William’s tomb also sits pride of place near the front doors of the Chapel.

Richard Trethewey - The Old Gardener

Richard Jose was born in Lanner near Redruth and at the age of just fourteen his father died and the eldest of five children, it was down to Richard to provide for his family. Richard crossed the Atlantic on board a ship during the depths of winter and gained the nickname ‘the singing kid’ due to his already incredible singing voice. He was expecting to meet an Uncle at New York but his Uncle never arrived. At the age of fourteen Richard walked right across the states from New York to Nevada, finding work along the way singing in bars and saloons to Cornish miners (Cousin Jacks) who had already emigrated. The long story short is that Richard Jose became one of the world’s early recording stars releasing Gramaphone records. He sung on Broadway and in San Francisco and was even described by the great Tenor Caruso as being the worlds greatest balladeer! Richard Jose returned to Cornwall in 1895 to perform in his home Lanner Chapel where people queued out the doors. Cornish folk, proud of Richard’s fame put candles and lanterns in their windows all the way between Redruth and Lanner to welcome him home.
