Three experts on how to understand the USA

Sometimes, a seemingly small event can trigger an explosion. In New York City, in the time of Corona, an eccentric surgeon is forced to watch helplessly as a seismic disruption in human rights and freedom unfurls right before his eyes. On the opposite side of the world in Wuhan, another physician/historian and expert in the Tao uncovers suspicious and murderous circumstances in the death of Wenliang Li, one of the first tragic casualties of the era that launched a worldwide coup. The seductively beautiful Cara Liu subsequently escapes from the clutches of her authoritarian regime by a seemingly miraculous granting of asylum in the United States.

Yet the West itself subsequently becomes completely consumed by an unstoppable and self-reinforcing moral panic created by a perfect storm of factors from media exaggeration to primitive fear to the desire for political control and profiteering. Failing to discover an easy solution, they find they are alone yet together as a tiny minority of the population in the quest to set the world back on a course towards liberty. To make matters more difficult, the two are seemingly haunted by the ghosts of a prior invasion of New York City from more than two hundred years earlier. In the parallel story that unfolds, two frontier scouts, seeking to pursue land in the Ohio country for their patron are frustrated in their efforts by the outbreak of the American Revolution, forcing them to pick a side to support, causing them to become more embroiled deeper into the conflict itself.

Can the pair of disenfranchised physicians learn enough from the apparitions of the past to be steered towards a useful solution to the societal woes, or further into insanity? Will they intersect with the path of their predecessors?

Anxious Generation: how to tackle a mental health pandemic

Le 12 mars 2020 le président nous dit « plus d’école les enfants » puis le 16 mars il ajoute « confinement pour les parents ». On parle de distanciation sociale, avant de corriger en distanciation physique. Peu importe pour les plus fragiles, il sont condamnés à rester isolés.
En mai 2020 ils nous ont laissé un peu sortir, en juillet ils ont commencé à nous masquer, en octobre ils nous ont reconfinés et en décembre ils ont encore changé pour instaurer le couvre-feu.

En janvier 2021 le couvre-feu arrive plus tôt, puis en avril ils reconfinent.
En mai les terrasses sont rouvertes, en juin le couvre-feu cesse, les masques en extérieur ne sont plus obligatoires et commence le pass-sanitaire, qui deviendra obligatoire en août. Et là commence la nouvelle histoire d’un virus qu’il fallait au début éviter et qu’à présent tout le monde veut avoir car il faut se faire scanner pour aller boire un simple café.

En septembre 2021 les soignants deviennent victimes avec l’obligation vaccinale et en janvier 2022 le pass vaccinal remplace le pass sanitaire.
Le 14 mars 2022, 2 ans après les premières annonces,  c’est la fin du pass vaccinal.

A cette époque souvenez-vous, le président nous rassurait en proclamant « nous sommes en guerre »
On nous a dit que le coronavirus était l’adversaire, pour commencer. Puis ce furent les personnes en bonne santé, devenues susceptibles de le communiquer. Les cas-contacts, les positifs, les négatifs, les faux, les vrais, les laisser-passer, le flics traquant les gens et les faisant payer pour avoir voulu respirer, les familles sidérées, déchirées, divisées, tout le monde apeurés et tous les soirs les chiffres présentés pour ne pas nous rassurer. Puis après les avoir applaudit, on a fait des soignants les boucs-émissaires en les obligeant à se vacciner. 
N'oubliez jamais que sous prétexte de protection, nous avons été terrorisés et divisés, que les plus faibles jeunes et vieux ont été traumatisés.

5 ans plus tard nous sommes toujours là et d’autres guerres, des vraies, cette fois, ont continué à apparaître. 5 ans plus tard, les dirigeants n’ont pas trop changé, leur manière de faire non plus : ils créent la peur, la terreur et la culpabilité avec des discours mortifères, morbides et moroses. La mort dans l’âme, le moral en berne, on se parle mal, on masque à grand peine que souvent les gens sont au bord des larmes.

Mais 5 ans plus tard, l’essentiel demeure : notre quête à tous est celle du bonheur et non de la peur. Ils peuvent s’agiter, menacer, contraindre, 
Evoquer la guerre pour le plus grand nombre
Mais sur nos visages ne pourront éteindre
Le sourire de ceux qui ne craignent l’ombre

Nesta segunda-feira, 17 de março de 2025, em participação no programa Conexões, a professora do Departamento de Pediatria e vice-diretora da Faculdade de Medicina da UFMG Cristina Alvim, ex-coordenadora do comitê da covid na Universidade, falou sobre a atual situação da doença no mundo e sobre a importância da vacinação neste momento.

Há mais de cinco anos, a covid-19 era declarada uma pandemia pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). Foi no dia 11 de março de 2020. O anúncio revelava que a doença causada pelo novo coronavírus, identificada pela primeira vez em Wuhan, na China, tinha tomado proporções mundiais. A rapidez na transmissão do vírus levou a medidas drásticas, como o isolamento social, para conter o número de casos. No Brasil, o governo Bolsonaro criticava as recomendações dos cientistas, enquanto a maioria dos governadores seguia a OMS. No início de 2021, o país começava a vacinar a população, o que permitiu a reversão lenta do cenário. 

Em maio de 2022, o Ministério da Saúde declarou o fim da Emergência em Saúde Pública de Importância Nacional. Neste momento, a transmissão estava controlada e o isolamento social, suspenso. Um ano depois foi a vez de a OMS fazer o mesmo em nível mundial, mas, oficialmente, a covid-19 segue com status de pandemia. Os principais sintomas são os respiratórios, mas a doença também pode ter efeitos sobre o trato gastrointestinal e consequências neurológicas. 

Desde 2020, a covid-19 matou mais de 700 mil pessoas no Brasil. O alerta nesses cinco anos depois da declaração da pandemia é manter a vacina em dia. A imunização contra a doença foi incluída no Programa Nacional de Imunizações (PNI), ou seja, faz parte da rotina de imunização das crianças, de seis meses até cinco anos. Além disso, continua valendo a vacinação de grupos especiais, como pessoas vivendo em instituições de longa permanência, pessoas com comorbidades, imunocomprometidas, população indígena, ribeirinhos, quilombolas, trabalhadores da saúde, pessoas com deficiências permanentes e pessoas privadas de liberdade.
