The cosmetics and grooming products industry is like the wild wild West. Until recently, the regulatory system failed to keep consumers safe from toxicants that likely increase their offspring’s “risks of cancer, fertility issues, neurological deficits, and immune dysfunction.” 

And then came the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, or MoCRA.

Today, we talk about MoCRA with subject matter expert Dahlia Kelada,  founder/CEO of TopicalFormulator.com and Salve Naturals & Native Earth. When Congress passed the new law, it did so with the goal to help ensure the safety of multiple cosmetic products many consumers use daily. MoCRA went into effect in late December 2024. 

Dahlia is a graduate of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she earned a Master of Science in Health Science with a focus in Integrative Medicine. She has 20+ years of product development/commercialization experience supporting over 80 brands. Salve Naturals is a national all-natural and organic topical medicine company that was the first to make 100% natural, plant-based topical medicines that are registered with the FDA as OTCs. 

MoCRA is the most significant expansion of U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s authority to regulate cosmetics since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act was passed in 1938. 

But how will it effect consumers and producers?

Most people use several different personal care products every day. For example, you may use a shampoo and conditioner, creams or lotions, shaving cream, fragrances, toothpaste and some makeup, including lipstick, eyeliner and eyeshadow.

If you read the labels on these products you'll see a list of chemicals, and you may assume that these chemicals have been tested to make sure that they're safe. 

However, the Food and Drug Administration does not do any long-term testing on these chemicals. They may be tested to see whether they result in short-term problems, such as skin irritation, and the FDA may act, if they get complaints about harmful effects from a product.  

Several nonprofit groups are finding or conducting the necessary studies and distributing that vital information to us consumers. One organization is the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and in this program, we feature Kaley Beins a senior scientist of chemical safety and toxicology at the EWG.

This week's bedroom mix had a net gain in payoff versus risk. Again, not perfect, but I don;'t expect them to be when I don't plan them. Most of these didn't even have extra cue points! It is also much darker than last week's, and some of these haven't had their time in the sun yet. But, oh boy, did they shine. No idea how I overlook some of these until the last minute.

Bedroom Sessions 5 . 9 . 25

No funky intro. This is a mini Obsession Session with a few sequences from OS III, except it's 75% smaller at about 80 minutes. It's a teaser for my second attempt at Obsession Sessions III. I felt like I could do better, and I'm upping the tracks from 60 to 80. So it will probably clock at six hours. We'll see. In the meantime, enjoy some EBM, Darkwave, Dark Disco, and Witch House.

I made my first basic edit in Rekordbox of Geistech's "Tried". Just moved some parts and gave it structure to fit better between the tracks before and after. Happy to hear feedback. I didn't chuck it into Logic Pro, but I'm going to give it a go. Maybe add some harmony.

Most of the other tracks were edited to smooth out the intro/ outro runways for smoother transitions. A lot of tracks in the dark genres aren't super beat-match friendly. It came out pretty close to how I wanted it to sound. Not perfect, but close to my goal!

Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
