ICT newscast headlines for today:

- The Oklahoma supreme court will decide whether or not Native Americans are exempt from taxes. Muscogee Creek citizen Alicia Stroble is arguing that she is immune from paying state income taxes under federal law. Stroble cites the recent case before the U.S. Supreme Court called McGirt versus Oklahoma — saying that decision protects her in this situation, because she lives and works on the tribal lands of the Muscogee Creek.

- The American Heart Association reports that more than 60 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native women of child-bearing age, have “suboptimal” heart health, due to social factors. This means before entering pregnancy, factors such as exposure to violence and childhood trauma contribute to higher risks of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

- Some states and municipalities have adopted Indigenous People's Day as a holiday. The latest is Medway, Massachusetts. The town voted to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day rather than Columbus Day.

- A Hawaiian woman is one of the latest to grace U.S. Currency. Edith Kanaka’ole is the first Native Hawaiian woman to be featured on a U.S. quarter. She is being recognized as part of the American Women Quarters Program which honors women who have shaped history.

- In Portland, Oregon LGBTQ students enjoyed their first Queer Prom since 2019. The Native American Youth and Family Center, better known as NAYA held its annual dance at the Portland Art Museum.

- A civil rights complaint has been filed in North Dakota, following an incident of taunting at a high school basketball game. During a game between Jamestown High and Bismarck High, war whoops and monkey noises were heard from the Jamestown stands, according to the complaint.

- A bill to ensure Native students can wear regalia in public school graduation ceremonies is making its way through the North Carolina Legislature. The American Indians Graduating with Honors Act passed unanimously in the state House and now sits in a Senate committee.

ICT newscast headlines for today:
- A new substance abuse campaign is aiming to address drug use among Native youth in Oklahoma. The Association of American Indian Physicians has collaborated with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for the project.
- A Federal government lawsuit is accusing a Wisconsin town of trespassing on the Lac du Flambeau reservation. The U.S. Department of Justice says the town, also named Lac du Flambeau, did not renew access easements with the Nation a decade ago.
- Diversity in Hollywood is slowly, but surely, increasing. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says it has new standards for a film to be eligible for an Oscar for Best Picture. The film must have at least one of the lead actors, or significant supporting actors, be from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.
- There is a new legacy stone at the entrance of the Oklahoma History Center to honor N. Scott Momaday. The Kiowa author who was the first Indigenous person to receive the Pulitzer prize. He has received many recognitions in his life, including the National Medal of the Arts and the Academy of American Poets Prize.
- The work of a Spirit Lake Dakota artist and storyteller is being honored. Marlena Myles has been awarded $50,000 from the Knight Foundation for its Arts and tech fellowship. Myles’ most recent project is in Saint Paul, Minnesota and is a permanent digital installation called “The Dakota Spirit Walk.” Users point their phone along the 27-acre path while spirits are overlaid on the screen.
