In Episode 238 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg takes stock of the Democratic ticket's new vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and the role he played as Minnesota governor in two of the major activist struggles in the North Star State over the past years—the 2020 Black Lives Matter uprising, which began in Minneapolis; and the fight against Line 3, which delivers Canadian shale oil to US markets, and imperils the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabe indigenous people.

MAGA excoriates Walz for his supposed coddling of the "rioters" in 2020, when in fact the National Guard troops he mobilized committed human rights abuses. On the other hand, he did open a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis police department, finally resulting in a consent decree mandating "changes to address race-based policing." Similarly, Walz capituated to the oil interests on Line 3, which went operational in 2021. But despite this betrayal, he has won plaudits from progressives for his policies in support of labor and decarbonization of the state econmy. And the cannabis legalization bill he signed in 2023 expicitly recognizes the sovereign powers of Native American nations, allowing a cannabis economy to take hold on the state's Anishinaabe lands.

In this episode, we revisit our interview from 2019 with Darrel McLeod. Darrel passed away this week and his loss is being felt by the writing and reading community across Canada. Darrel's books were captivating and vulnerable letting people into his life and stories. Darrel McLeod was the author of Mamaskatch, Peyakow, and A Season in Chezgh'un. A Season in Chezgh'un is a finalist for the 2024 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize.

ABOUT DARREL McLEOD: Darrel J. McLeod is Cree from Treaty-8 territory in Northern Alberta. Before deciding to pursue writing, he worked as an educator, chief negotiator of land claims for the federal government and executive director of education and international affairs with the Assembly of First Nations. He holds degrees in French literature and education from the University of British Columbia. He is the author of two memoirs: the award-winning Mamaskatch (2018; winner of the Governor General's Literary Award for Nonfiction; shortlisted for many other major prizes; translated into French and German editions), followed by Peyakow (2021) which was also shortlisted for several literary prizes. He currently lives in Sooke, BC, and divides his time between writing and singing in a jazz band.

They talk about how Siibii is making space for Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ Artists in the Music Industry, their favourite things about the Indigenous music scene, and what it's like returning to the Minoshkite Indigenous music and arts festival.

"Imagine un guitariste qui, tout à coup, commence à jouer des mélodies profondes et envoûtantes. Chaque accord, chaque note, semble vibrer dans l’air comme un appel. Les sons sont doux, remplis de tendresse, mais aussi un peu mystérieux, comme si la guitare elle-même était en train de raconter une histoire d’amour secrète. Ce sont des mélodies qui touchent et qui envahissent l’espace.

Mais voilà, les voisins, qui entendent ce flot musical, n’hésitent pas à réagir à leur manière : ils prennent leurs tambours et commencent à taper en rythme, comme pour ajouter une dimension festive, une sorte de percussion qui pousse le guitariste à oser davantage. C’est comme si la musique devenait un langage partagé, un signal, une invitation. L’un pousse l’autre à descendre de son appartement, à se laisser emporter par la musique, pour retrouver ce type inconnu qui attend quelque part en bas, dans une situation presque surréaliste.
