CDMX SOUVENIRS – GROOVY A-GO-GO, BEAT AND GARAGE ROCKERS FROM MEXICO (1961-1971), compiled by DJ UNIVERSAL BEATNIK.

In early 2025 I spent two weeks in Ciudad de México (CDMX) and was instantly hooked by the culture, people, lucha libre wrestling, mezcal drinking and street food, among many other unusual things... Another highlight was the local record stores in the neighborhoods of Roma Norte, Doctores and Cuauhtémoc, where I hung out quite a lot. After some additional trips to the flea markets Tianguis de Antiguedades and El Chopo, I ended up with over 150 Mexican records from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, mostly 45s, containing an impressive amount of top-notch KILLER TUNES… So then, a couple of months later I sat down at home to prepare this mix, CDMX SOUVENIRS. What you’ll find here are 22 of my favourite 60’s Beat and Garage Punk tracks from Mexico, that I found during my stay. Another mix with Latin / Cumbia / Mambo sounds is also currently in the making, but I will leave that for another day… Shout outs to everyone for their help and support, especially the fine folks at Discotitlan, Casa Calypso, Chez Nobody and Revancha Records. CDMX SOUVENIRS – GROOVY A-GO-GO, BEAT AND GARAGE ROCKERS FROM MEXICO (1961-1971)

Tala Tape is a new beat tape by hip-hop producer El Pres Beats.

Tala, (Sanskrit: “clap”) in the music of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, is a metric cycle with a specific number of beats—from 3 to 128—that recur in the same pattern throughout a musical performance. (source: Encyclopædia Britannica)

At the end of 2019 El Pres Beats made a 4 week roundtrip through India, where he was inspired by the country and its music and started making a selection of beats by sampling old Indian records. Tala Tape is the end result of this. Sole collaborator on this project is Dutch bass music producer Gumnaam, who co-produced the track Kranti.
