Born in Cairo, Joseph’s chosen instrument, the Oud is an Arabic lute, the ancestor of the lute and modern guitar. A virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide and is known for his brilliant technique, deep musicianship, storytelling and joyous style of performance. Joseph has performed his own works with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Melbourne, WA and Adelaide Symphony, Ukraine National Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, the Morphing Chamber Orchestra and his Concerto for Oud & Orchestra with the Sydney Symphony was performed and released by ABC Classics, Australia in 2019. He was also the first and only Australian composer to be performed by the Academy of Ancient Music in the United Kingdom. He has recorded his music with many jazz luminaries such as John Abercrombie, Jack de Johnette, Roy Ayers, Bela Fleck, Mike Stern, Joey DeFrancesco, Richard Bona and Christian McBride. Classical collaborations include Richard Tognetti, William Barton, The Grigoryan Brothers, Christian Lindberg, James Crabb and his songs have been performed/recorded by The Song Company and Andreas Scholl.

Shepparton Festival's Kristen Retallick: Winter Taster event with Joseph Tawardros

One FM Breakfast announcer Terri Cowley talks to the Director of the Shepparton Festival Kristen Retallick and photographer Cam Matheson about the upcoming exhibition Shepparton Festival flood stories: An Item of Connection.

Where were you during the 2022 Floods?  

After one year, the people of Greater Shepparton and across Victoria are recovering from the floods. This project is designed to create space for conversation and story sharing that is just as important as physical and property recovery. The aim of this project is not only to represent our grief and recovery but to celebrate our community and tell our story of resilience and healing. 

From October 2023 until the end of the year, a series of portrait photo sessions will “pop-up” at different locations around flood affected areas of the Goulburn Valley. The portraits will be of people who experienced the floods in different ways and have a story they would like to share. The photographs will be shown in a large-scale outdoor exhibition in Shepparton as part of the 2024 Shepparton Festival before touring to surrounding communities. 

Each participant having their portrait taken is asked to bring an object to be photographed with to help us talk about and represent all of our very different experiences throughout the floods. We would also like to record your story in audio to accompany the photographs on the Shepparton Festival website.

The sessions at Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre on Monday 15th November and Shepparton South Community Centre on Tuesday 16th November will also include an art making activity with a local visual artist if you would like to record your story this way as well or instead.

These are drop in sessions, so come along any time between the times of each session. Your photo and story recording should take between 5 and 10 minutes, but can be longer if you need more time.  Bring an item that could symbolise what you lost, that you rediscovered cleaning up, something related to volunteer work, something that gained significance during the floods, or represents a positive experience, even a person connected to your healing process.

Cam Matheson has been a documentary and portrait photographer for thirteen years. He was born and raised in Tatura and is now a Toolamba resident. On October 15th he lost all of his personal possessions to the flood.

I sit down with creator Delvin “DeshowMercy” Young on episode 281! His journey begins leaving Dallas, TX at a young age settling in Memphis with his grandmother. After graduating from Raleigh-Egypt High School, Delvin moved to Hollywood, CA and was discovered by a movie director. He began acting and modeling and later suffered a severe injury that changed the trajectory of his life. Originally aired on Monday 20th February 2023, we met with Visual Effects Supervisor and Creative Director, Russell Dodgson, who had recently delivered the incredible third and final season of Philip Pullman’s 'His Dark Materials'. 

Joining as co-host at the time was Sana Rehman, VFX Production Coordinator, who has since been promoted to VFX Line Producer! 

We discuss the 'people game' of being a VFX Supervisor, how the things that you do outside of your work often define what it is you love about your job, the importance of having 'imposter syndrome' and recognising that you may not always be the smartest person in the room. 

As well as reflecting on 5 years on His Dark Materials, we also reminisce on a love of DVD extras, breakdancing, Thai boxing, and a career peppered with incredible micro-mentors.

This was famously the first mention of the idea of 'micro mentors', and has come up many times on the pod since!

We emphasise the significance of maintaining honesty and transparency, working with your heroes, exceeding job expectations, and being a pleasure to work with.

On Monday's episode, we caught up with New York based Will Frazier, Associate Creative Director, to learn about his career journey and how he became integral to our work on the Geico Gecko. Guest co-host Leslie Clark, Junior Asset Technical Director, leads Part Two for an in-depth discussion about his career, inspirations, collaborations and lots more!

We learn more about Will's work on the Geico Gecko, including the creative process behind developing the character. He also shares his personal favourite spots and how his friends still send him lizard memes, calling him the 'Gecko Guy.' We also get an insight into life on a shoot and his on-set responsibilities. 

We also discuss what inspired Will to pursue a career in animation and explore some of his early childhood influences. We discuss his favourite movies, changes in the industry, and Will's views on the importance of school outreach programmes in promoting diversity within the industry.
