Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I’m your host, James Navé. In this episode, I have the great pleasure of speaking with my longtime friend, John Biscello—a gifted writer, actor, poet, and theater director who’s been shaping the artistic landscape of Taos, New Mexico for over two decades.

John and I connected across the Atlantic—he in Taos and me in a 6th-floor studio on rue Dauphine in Paris. In this lively conversation, John and I discuss his latest youth theater production, Neverland Noir, a metaphysical remix of Peter Pan featuring 30 young performers. The show premieres at the Wildflower Playhouse in Taos, April 11–13.

John founded the Taos Youth Ensemble over ten years ago, and in that time, he discovered just how transformative the creative process can be for young people. Our conversation explores how theater teaches flexibility, confidence, collaboration, and the power of embracing mistakes onstage as creative gold.

We also dive into John’s rich, multidisciplinary creative life—his work as a novelist, playwright, spoken word artist, and filmmaker—and how Taos continues to be a haven for imaginative expression. As always, our talk reminded me why we make art first: to connect, grow, and honor the magic in things not going quite as planned.

Inhale the Light / Exhale the Dark
A Two-Part Musical Journey

Inhale the Light is the first movement of a two-part musical experience that explores the emotional cycle of transformation — from light to shadow, from clarity to chaos, and ultimately toward resolution.

Part I, Inhale the Light, begins with a sense of calm and breath — an intentional space filled with warmth, optimism, and subtle beauty. It's the inhale before the descent, capturing moments of hope, reflection, and the quiet strength that precedes darkness.

Part II, Exhale the Dark, is currently in production. It will pick up where Part I leaves off — descending into heavier emotional terrain. Where Inhale the Light gently opens the door, Exhale the Dark will push through it, confronting the weight, intensity, and eventual release that comes with the darker side of the journey.

Together, these two pieces form a complete arc — a musical inhale and exhale — reflecting the duality we all move through in life: peace and pain, light and shadow, clarity and confusion.

Part I: Inhale The Light

Ron’s Top Hat is more than a song—it’s a statement. Crafted in the rolling studio of a converted bus deep in Carver, Massachusetts, this track was written, recorded, and built from the ground up by independent artist Ron Delorean and his musical partner Navi (aka Navador).

This 4-minute and 20-second masterpiece blends gritty bars, jazzy keys, live guitar riffs, and the kind of heart you can’t fake. With Ron on the mic, and drums and Navi on strings and rhythm, this isn’t just music—it’s a lifestyle. It’s freedom. It’s about taking what you’ve got and making something timeless.

If you’ve been following my journey—whether it was through “Big Red Bow” or the early bus studio sessions—this is the one that ties it all together. Suits, soul, struggle, and shine. You’ll hear it in every line.

The track was originally titled “Yours, Mine & Ours”, then “Black Top Hat”, and now? It’s “Ron’s Top Hat”—because this is personal. This is legacy.

A few months ago I met a girl from Belarus and we quickly became great friends. Her friendship inspired me to write a track entirely in Belarusian.

The beat is pure boom‑bap—hard‑hitting drums, dusty samples and a warm low‑end that nods to classic hip‑hop while letting the melody breathe.

Composition:
Instead of recording the vocals myself, I fed the final lyric sheet into a state‑of‑the‑art vocal synthesis engine. The AI gave me a clean, slightly otherworldly voice that respects the natural cadence of Belarusian while staying perfectly in sync with the instrumental.

Why “Зоры, зоры” is the anchor
The repeated refrain “Зоры, зоры” (the stars) became my anchor. Every time the track loops back to that line, I picture myself looking up at an unfamiliar sky, wondering where my own soul belongs. That sense of “searching for a place” is exactly what I want listeners to feel—whether they’re from Minsk, São Paulo, or anywhere in between.
