There’s this saying: “everything’s bigger in Texas.” The implication being that since the state itself is so expansive, so too must be the objects within. We checked, and for the most part, this is false. They just have more room in which to put stuff. Cars and houses are pretty much the same size as everywhere: they just occupy larger lots and navigate longer thoroughfares. Even Texas’ world-famous BBQ is really only “bigger” in terms of portions — the short ribs are still short, the jumbo shrimp no more jumbo than usual. In fact, we could only find one thing coming out of Texas that’s bigger than elsewhere in the country: the beats.

You can tip your ten-gallon hat to Ben Hixon for that. Now based in Brooklyn but hailing from Dallas, Ben heads that city’s Dolfin Records, which for ten years has been pumping out Lone Star bangers the way Texaco pumps out crude. Speaking of black gold, Ben also keeps the pipeline of dance records flowing at Academy records. And Ben’s DJ sets are as well-stocked as his bins, overflowing with House, Hip-Hop and R’n’B sounds of every possible region and flavor. Not bigger sounds, mind you, just bigger portions.
