During the 1980s, I spent a lot of my time riding around the British Rail network, mainly chasing Class 40s and then Class 50s, but also riding behind a number of other classes.

I also made some tape recordings, from the front window or the platform, using my trusty 'ghetto-blaster' or 'boom box’, and now these recordings can finally be heard!

There were many fine rail tours back in the 1980s, and it was often possible to get haulage behind your favourite class and travel over rare track at the same time, as with this tour, and all for a modest outlay of £15-20. Happy days 😍

This recording takes us back to Dec 1985 with The Christmas Cracker IV, which ran from Preston to Paddington, with pioneer D200 / 40122 in charge - the only Class 40 remaining in service.

The railtour, which was run by Traintours, was unmissable for me, as it passed through two of my local stations Greenford and Southall - the very last Class 40 to visit - and recorded on tape for posterity! 

The recordings I made on the day were made on a Maxell II metal tape and have lasted quite well over the last 40 years - some distortion with the loco at full power, but atmospheric all the same!

So come back in time with me to enjoy a noisy ride behind classic Class 40 D200 - hope you enjoy these sounds of the 80s. Happy Days 😎)

1) Start - 0m 30s - We start the recording with D200 as she runs round the stock at Preston at the start of the tour. 
2) 0m 35s - 1m 45s - As we await departure, D200’s boiler can be heard venting steam under the roof at Preston 😍) 
3) 1m 45s - 2m 15s - The driver is clearly getting impatient, as he revs up the EE16SVT engine, still under the roof at Preston! 
4) 2m 20s - 5m 30s - Eventually we get the whistle, and D200 finally makes a start - only to come swiftly to a halt again as a last-minute passenger tries to board the train!! Then, finally, the driver opens up and we’re away! 
5) 5m 35s - 11m 15s - We’ve now made it to Manchester Victoria, and the rain is lashing down :) You can hear the station announcements, and an elderly DMU depart, before we start the attack on the infamous Miles Platting bank - recorded right to the summit😍) Right at the end of the track, a fellow tour passenger asks politely if he can pop his head out of the window to see the loco! 
6) 11m 20s - 12m 50s - Now we’re leaving Birmingham New Street, with more station announcements and a blast from the horn, with some ribald comments from the local spotters on the platform as we pass! 
7) 12m 55s - 14m 20s - After a p.w. stop near Brill tunnel, on the High Wycombe line, the train continues east heading fro London Paddington, via the Greenford loop.
8) 14m 20s - 15m 05s - After arrival and a shunt release, D200 with horn blaring leaves Paddington for refuelling at Old Oak Common.
9) 15m 10s - 20m 00s - With another cacophony of blasts on the horn, D200 restarts the tour from Paddington, heading west towards my home station of Southall. Note my two friends Llew & Tim who saw me off on the platform, and a rendition of “God Save the Queen” from local bashers on parcels platform 1A! Horn blaring again as we negotiate the crossovers, and then the driver applies power. Approaching Old Oak Common, the tour stewards try and encourage us back to our seats, but I’m staying at the front window until we pass through my home station of Southall 😍) 
10) 20m 05s - 21m 05s - Now at high speed, we thrash through Southall with my hard to hear comment of “here we go lads, last 40 through Southall” disappearing on the wind…

Fewer in recent years - highlights include The Smiths at Kingston Poly in 1983 (for 50p!), Iggy Pop + Suicide at Hammersmith in 2010, Iggy Pop again at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016. He grew up on the music of the nineties, loves vinyls and is still expanding his collection of breakbeat and styles close to him.
The turning point for his love of breakbeat was Adam Freeland's performance in Prague's Roxy.
And then everything was clear .. :-)
He played his sets in legendary Prague clubs (Roxy, Cross Club, Chapeau Rouge, Meat Factory, XT3, PUNTO) but also at festivals (Metronome, Mighty Sounds, etc ..), he has a large number of performances alongside legends of the genre, such as such as Drumattic Twins, Elite Force, Sister Bliss, or Uncle, to name a few.
The sound of his sets is usually sharply broken and you will find a lot of dance and pop motifs in it, they often grind into the realms of electro, oak, hip hop but also other styles. He likes to play from records, but digital is no stranger to him either, his own studio is riddled with hardware for his own production, which he currently releases on the UK label Diesel Recordings, Perennial Recording Networks but also on the Us label One7Audio and the Slovak Breaks.sk.
Several of his releases have been placed in the Beatport charts, namely 3x Top100BreaksTracks and 3x in Top100BreaksReleases, or they have also been included in electronic compilations .. Best New Break November 20, BassBreakBeats, Electro Vibes and Breakbeat Warriors.
