It is the late Bronze Age, Ancient Greece. Without warning, the King of one of the less significant Mycenaean states exits the city gates, disappearing into the wilderness beyond. Immediately, the population suffer a prolonged, crippling drought. Months pass. Perhaps the Dark Ages are coming.

This song is based upon an old, post-pub instrumental, ‘Spy for the NCB’.

Negativland has always been about media literacy; their sound collages and pranks are not only humorous but reveal something about how media function. But in recent years, as the world has changed around them, their  relationship to this aspect of their practice has had to evolve. What was subversive in the 80s is mostly met with a shrug today. While sampling has become less essential to their work, the group continues to reappropriate and recontextualize human speech, and in an age of AI voice clones, the importance of using actual voices becomes even more significant. Last fall, I sat down with Negativland’s Mark Hosler and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly) at Krakow, Poland’s Unsound festival to discuss the history of their long running group, the importance of radio, and how the changing mediascape has transformed the meaning of their work as collage has gone mainstream.

Dada never died.

It seeped into the cracks of the century, waiting. Anti-war art, they’ll call it. But this is no art gallery moment. This is a hand reaching out of 1921, grabbing us by the throat, forcing us to look at the mess we’ve made. War never ended; it just changed masks.

"Nothing is true. Everything is permitted,". The spirit of this thing—this film, this jam, this protest—is the same. Rhythm breaks the chains of time; symmetry collapses under the weight of violence.

The screen flickers, shapes dance—diagonals cutting through smoke, circles spinning like air-raid sirens. And over it all, sax and sitar howl their hymn for the broken.

The revolution is shapeless. The soundtrack is jagged. The future is unwritten.

Recorded 9th Nobember 2014 by the raw spirit of Dadaism, this collaboration with an old friend and may be one of the best saxophonists of Alicante, fuses experimental cinema and live music to denounce the ongoing violence of November 2024.

A striking blend of past and present, this project stands as a creative rebellion against war, echoing the Dadaist ethos of disruption and peace.

Since 2012, A Closer Listen has claimed a specialized niche in the music industry: instrumental album reviews!  By concentrating on this above all else (singles, videos, concerts, interviews, lyric albums, announcements), we’ve built a healthy fanbase and a strong reputation.

If music is recorded and nobody listens, does it still make a sound?

The Neo-infantiles are a  band that claim to not be a band, just killing time. The only thing they have in common is being disabled. The Boofer only has one arm and sings and plays the guitar, badly. Breakage plays the drums and has no legs, Breakage has asked me to not disclose that he has no legs (sucker to trust me). Heard plays the bass, badly again, and is profoundly deaf in one of his King Lear's and lives with a screeching noise in it and does not care what he sounds like (I love him like I love me). Forget plays guitar too but Forget has had a severe-traumatic scone injury and never remembers any of the songs. He tries his hardest though and he is also like a brother. Pain builds unity. Then there is Shakes who hangs around and sings sometimes, he has post-traumatic Epilepsy and often fits, spits, froths and shakes. The ladies, punk ladies, love him the most even although he often pisses his pants



STBI has left me more than half-deaf so if the tones are off, don't shoot me. If writing stories is mind masturbation, then what do you call writing songs? >> Still the most pleasant part of my day
