The King's Wisdom

We are not the kind of family that waits to wrap all of our gifts on Christmas Eve. We are the sort that wraps our gifts as soon as we buy them, immediately tucking them under the tree in our living room. In a way, these wrapped-up gifts become as treasures to us, hidden in plain sight. This is one of my favourite ways to implement the reality of Advent in our home–with a tangible sense of longing, of forced waiting. Come Christmas morning, these treasure-gifts, the ones we have always intended to give our children, are there – ready and waiting to be opened.

That’s the thing about treasures: they are meant to be discovered. Meant to be unearthed, unburied, and marveled over.

The apostle Paul tells us that in Christ is “hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

But notice that these treasures are not hidden from us, but hidden for us. In Christ. There is an invitation here to unearth and discover these treasures which are found only in Jesus.

We live in a world that offers us various forms of “wisdom.” We are inundated with messages aimed at helping us do better, be better, and live smarter, “wiser” lives. But we must remember where our help comes from. Paul boils it down to this: in Christ alone is true wisdom and knowledge. In Christ alone we find the wisdom to live out this day, in this cultural moment, at this particular time in history.

PRAYER: Father, thank you that in Christ I find all the wisdom and knowledge I need for this day and for this life. Amen.
