Legendary Saxophonist Daniel Carter and the Telepathic Band Celebrate Their Imaginative Tradition and Daring Sound with the Moody New Release, ‘Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2’

The Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2 is the second volume from the Telepathic Mysteries recording session, documented at Sear Sound, in NYC in 2019. 

Named after the sort of improvisational style that can only be accomplished after a decade or two of collaboration, The Telepathic Band is made up of long-time friends and collaborators Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putman, Hilliard Greene, and Federico Ughi. With Daniel, Federico and Matthew having played together since 2009 and Federico and Daniel collaborating since 2001, they have developed their own language and together play extemporaneously and strategically in increasingly genre-defying projects. 

This most recent album is classic Telepathic Band approach, celebrating their imaginative tradition and daring sound while edging towards a dissonant tension and gentle reprieve that signals a new era in their sound. Possibly their darkest project yet, the extended tracks enter a more mysterious realm, while drawing from new classical and orchestral influences particularly reminiscent of Impressionistic composition. Matthew Putman plays Debussy-esque melodies on piano and psychedelic dub keyboards. Patrick Holmes delivers eerie, lyrical clarinet solos, and Hilliard Greene offers his own harmonies on bass. Federico Ughi again challenges the assumed role of a percussionist, diverging from steady rhythms, to offer uniquely spontaneous and open drumming, while Daniel Carter returns to his perennial role as a multi-instrumental and chamber-focused informal facilitator, easing the spaces in between features and lending an added measure of coherence between musicians.

As multi-instrumentalists and deeply imaginative artists, the group offers haunting and impressive performances imbued with a sense of mysticism, as part of a larger journey towards an indecipherable destination. The Telepatic Band, or smaller versions of the ensemble, are the house band for the Forward Festival, live music events organized in Brooklyn New York, Tangier (Morocco), and Canale Monterano (Italy) on a regular basis. 

Given the improvisational nature of the music, each song is an inimitable one-off, live show.

Daniel Carter and Telepathic Band: 'Mayaland' from 'Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2'

After performing and recording together for over fifteen years as members of various bands, musical genius Daniel Carter, pianist Matthew Putman, and drummer Federico Ughi have come together as a trio for the first time.  Whether you recognize them individually, as the core team at 577 Records, or from their involvement in ensembles like the legendary quintet Telepathic Band (which released seven spectacular albums of its own), you’ve never heard them like you will in their debut album, Stream of a Dream.

Their premiere release is a live recording from their March 2024 performance at Brooklyn’s New York Forward Festival.  This music-focused arts initiative was established in 2015 and is now bringing its roster to Canale Monterano, Italy and Tangier, Morocco.  Always held in eccentric locations, these events flawlessly (and intentionally) capture the intimacy so iconic of this music community. They bring together many gifted musicians from 577 Records’ impressive catalog, activities, and recordings, as well as special guests, new friends, and emerging artists from the label’s SOF residencies.

Both the magical assembly of this trio and their collaborative avant-garde goodness are characteristic of the New York Forward Festival’s innovative vibes.  Together, Carter, Putman, and Ughi present essential, abstract music as a full-body experience that one can only describe as the exhilarating chemistry of sound.  This live show embodies the mystical and sacred nature of their decades-long friendship that is steeped in a shared passion for creating melodies.

577 Records will release Stream of a Dream on June 14, 2024, both digitally and on CD.

It’s not a rumor.  Brooklyn’s Eva Novoa has formed a new trio!  Novoa / Carter / Mela Trio, Vol. 1 marks their first sparkling album together (which is also Eva’s third with 577 Records).  The group performed live for the first time in Cambridge (Boston) in 2022 and at the NY Forward Festival in August 2024.
In an invigorating creative explosion recorded at New York City’s Sear Sound in 2021, the multi-talented instrumentalist unites with sax legend Daniel Carter and beloved drummer Francisco Mela.  Prepare to be reawakened when you experience Novoa tickling the ivories, dominating the Fender Rhodes, and wowing with the electric harpsichord and Chinese gongs.  Even her whistling will linger in your mind!  
As captured in the electrifying tracks “Aire” and “Fuego", Novoa / Carter / Mela Trio, Vol. 1 is inspired by the four elements (earth, wind, fire, and water).  “Hasta Mañana Vida Mia” weaves together Cuban tradition with soulful lyrics (sung by Francisco) and high-energy, rhythmic conversations with horns and drums.  The musicians’ free interplay approach defines this eclectic trio and their sonic universe.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Eva Novoa is a pianist and composer who’s been mastering her talents since childhood. Calling NYC home since 2012, she has rocked countless local venues with her thrilling performances and has played with many adored artists all over the globe.

Daniel Carter is the philosopher behind grassroots label, 577 Records.  He is world-renowned for his multi-instrumentalist talents and awe-inspiring musical innovation. If you’ve ever wondered what it sounds like to weave together wildly different genres, like electronic, experimental, funk, punk, metal, pop, R&B, and Reggae, Home is Where You Are is it!  The must-hear album comes from Dawn After Dawn, a new trio project by renowned multi-instrumentalist (and the intellectual who inspired the philosophy behind 577 Records) Daniel Carter, creative guitarist Aron Namenwirth and veteran sound engineer Jon Rosenberg.  Their curiosity-piquing masterpiece satisfies a deeply buried need for blissful chaos that you never knew you had.
Dawn After Dawn is a story of fate.  The trio was orbiting around each other, sparking creativity, duo collaborations, exploration, and encouragement that culminated in the mesmerizing, roaring fire you’ll hear in Home is Where You Are.  As your mind identifies familiar genres, a stream of improvisational sounds flows between and around them, presenting music in motion delightfully sprinkled with modernity and wonder.
“Find yourself lucky enough to have him [Daniel Carter] and Jon Rosenberg in a recording studio and some incredible guitars and pedals [on] a grand piano, incredible exchanges will happen,” says guitarist Aron Namenwirth.  “Then, the engineer becomes a musician, and a duo becomes a trio.”
Namenwirth and Rosenberg have been friends since 2020.  They also have a duo project, Hall of Mirrors, which was formed thanks to Daniel Carter’s wise suggestion.   There is something refreshing about the way Rosenberg applied loops and effects to the random acoustics of Carter’s saxophone, trumpet, and piano and Aron’s guitar, flute, and percussion in the trio’s new release.
“Between my love for dance music, the electric period of Miles Davis, and music for films, I began to add samples of tonally and rhythmically centered material to see if, somehow, these two disparate types of music could be made to mesh into something unique in the listener’s mind,” explains Brooklyn-based audio engineer, Jon Rosenberg.
For Carter, this project is all about freedom.  And he isn’t shy about expressing how much it inspires and energizes him.  He says it allows him to break out of the boxes of categorization and use sound as a spaceship to explore what else the universe has to offer.
“Dawn After Dawn inspires me to be more free of being a saxophonist, so to speak,” 577 Records Co-Founder Daniel Carter expresses.  “Seems there are certain requirements and expectations that can be suffocating, nerve-wracking, and confining in trying to be a saxophonist.  [I] have, for a long time, periodically been inspired to play in the inner voices instead of ‘playing on top of what’s going on’ (i.e., like a soloist).”

Pianist, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist Eva Novoa Releases Second Album from Her Dynamic Trio Featuring Sax Legend Daniel Carter and Renowned Drummer Francisco Mela
Brooklyn-based pianist Eva Novoa returns with The Freedom Suite: Novoa / Carter / Mela Trio, Vol. 2 — the second radiant release from her compelling trio with saxophone icon Daniel Carter and celebrated drummer Francisco Mela. This marks Novoa’s sixth album with 577 Records.
The trio first came together live in 2021, followed by a series of performances, including appearances in Cambridge (Boston) and later at the Brooklyn edition of the NY Forward Festival.
The Freedom Suite is an homage to jazz titan Duke Ellington — particularly his masterful big band suites and legendary orchestra featuring Johnny Hodges and other luminaries who helped define an era of jazz greatness. In contrast, Novoa presents her Suite in a more intimate format: the piano trio. The album comprises twelve pieces — mostly brief — with a few extended tracks such as “#6 Free to Be Free” and “#11 Cyborgs.”
For this recording, Novoa also steps in as a vocalist on several tracks, including “#2 Mainstream Media,” “#4 Big Grande,” “#5 Global,” “#6 Free to Be Free,” “#7 Dream,” and “#11 Cyborgs.” These pieces often feature a vocal dialogue between Novoa and Mela, whose expressive, word-infused style draws from rich Cuban traditions.
“Words are powerful,” says Novoa. “They define who we are, where we come from, and who we hope to become. Without words, there is no conversation — and without conversation, there is no real sense of time, space, or connection.”
The Freedom Suite emerged from deep philosophical and creative conversations — spoken, written, and improvised — between Novoa, Carter, and Mela. In the studio, Novoa introduced printed texts that served as thematic foundations for spontaneous, in-the-moment musical interpretation. The result is an urgent and organic interplay, where instruments speak to one another in a language as fluid as it is fearless.
Standout track “Cyborgs” begins with Novoa’s percussive piano, exemplifying the trio’s dynamic, conversational energy. “Creative Destruction” features Novoa on electric harpsichord in a wild, electric exchange. While “Free to Be Free” stands out as the album’s leading single, it also captures the essence and message of the entire Suite.

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Eva Novoa has been cultivating her distinctive voice since childhood. Now a staple of the New York creative music scene, she has performed across the globe and collaborated with some of the most adventurous voices in jazz and beyond.
The Freedom Suite will be released on October 3rd, 2025, on vinyl, CD, and digital platforms. The album features striking cover art by Novoa’s longtime friend and collaborator, acclaimed street photographer Richard Sandler — the iconic “Subway Kiss (N.Y.C. 1987).”

577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission. 

577 Records started the New York Forward Festival in 2015 to mark the momentous occasion of Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday, now with festival editions happening in Morocco and Italy as well, and the international residency program Sounds of Freedom, in which active musicians are awarded the opportunity to develop their own sound, skills, and improvisation concept.

100% of profit from the sale of most of these albums goes to the musicians.
