Whenever you listen to a Dazion (@thedazion) DJ set or new club track, you can hear how much fun he has with his music. The Hague man likes it rough and ready whether making bleep techno, acid breaks or new beat with whatever bit of forgotten hardware he can find. He's done so on labels including Second Circle, Safe Trip and Animals Dancing and always manages to capture the essence of what made the rave days so glorious while updating it with his own leftfield character. Next up for him is Grooveboxxx, a new album on Dekmantel that pays homage to The Hague’s 80s and 90s club scene all made with just one bit of "entry-level gear," the Roland MC-303 Groovebox.

Dazion opens this week's mix with a custom introduction inspired by the old Turn up the Bass TV spots and takes in some jams on that same MC-303 and a serval rips from early 90s rave CDs. It starts rather dreamy and serene before cracking up through the gears to get more weird. High energy rhythms, flailing percussive patterns and bulbous basslines all make for a helluva ride.

Dazion is the alias of producer, DJ and live performer, of The Hague born and raised: Cris Kuhlen. After being shot into the public eye, with his first ever solo EP in 2017, he managed to create quite a whirlwind, and his productions have proven to be a must-have in many well-known record bags.
Having a deep passion for “goofy” drum machine percussion, kaleidoscopic analogue synthesizers, battered guitar effects pedals, lilting melodies and humid special effects, has seen attention fall on a producer whose exotic and far-sighted musical vision is deliciously difficult to pigeonhole.
Kuhlen likes to work predominantly with unloved and little known electronic hardware. The Roland MC 303 forms a key part of his computer-free live shows, in which he creates dancefloor - fueled rhythms and an euphoric and uplifting experience. His latest works can be heard on labels such as: Dekmantel, Music From Memory, Safe trip, RIO and Animals Dancing. There is no telling what genre, or concept could be explored next. Surely, it will be embedded with the unwavering expression of Kuhlen’s musical direction and skills as a multi-instrumentalist.

Sharing with the audience what I think are the greatest records of the moment or what I think are timeless and personal classics is something that has motivated me through the years. I see my job as being a big filter: As a vinyl junkie, I am in the record stores chasing jams almost everyday. And I am also following movements in what I hear such as when techno was revolutionary or when the NY deep house sound really expanded, that’s what I would showcase. Now that a lot of techno and house roots are being revived and also reinvented, I can as always, enjoy playing a lot of new amazing records and some classics!

Twenty years in, from house to techno and everything in between, DJ Deep has immersed himself in the ebb and flows of music, be it NY, Chicago, Detroit or today’s current pulsating waves. He captures the magic of each as a leading figure of the Parisian scene and label owner, connecting the dots both forward and back with his own personal and multidimensional touch.

DJ Deep first got his break when he was invited by Laurent Garnier to DJ at parties such as Oz and Zoo at club Palace, or Boy, in his hometown Paris. Followed by regular appearances at the influential Rex Club, radio shows ‘A Deep Groove’ on then pirate station Radio FG, and later Radio Nova, plus a string of mix CDs on Distance and Respect is Burning, DJ Deep began touring worldwide, spreading his house and techno obsession to audiences craving his deep crates of musical truth.

In 2003, DJ Deep launched his labels Deeply Rooted (formerly Deeply Rooted House) and House Music Records, shining a spotlight on true-to-its roots house and techno records and harder to find gems from the likes of Kerri Chandler, L.B. Bad, Terence Fixmer, Mike Dehnert and Roman Poncet. The dream catalogue sealed his music curatorship with timeless records such as Kerri Chandler’s now classic “Back to the Raw”, Ben Klock’s remix of “Pong” by Kerri Chandler and Francois X’s “Code Red” remixed by Marcel Dettmann.

A reformat in 2015 and DJ Deep’s latest evolution in expression sees him join forces with Roman Poncet as Sergie Rezza, an open-minded experimentation with a standout album on Desire Records and performances including Berlin Atonal. Their straight-up techno live project, Adventice, saw a trio of releases on the reputable Tresor with performances at Weather Festival (Paris), Reperkusound Festival (Lyon) and many more to come. Fang is the duo’s house-leaning alias, which marked Deeply Rooted’s momentous 50th release in 2015. Unabatedly, DJ Deep’s solo adventure also continues with his own deep “cuts” out on his label or under his Rébeval raw house alias, on the cult NYC L.I.E.S Records.

Gold Code aka Raf Zevallos-Crowe, is a dj/producer based in Orange County, California. A lifelong music lover, collector and veteran dj, Raf's eclectic sets run the gamut of dance music with a base in house and techno.

Growing up in 1980s Los Angeles, he was initially inspired by radio mixshows and djs such as: Doc Martin, Rob One, Michael "Mixxin" Moore, and 1580 KDAY Mixmasters. Moving to San Francisco in 1992, he immersed himself in its underground scene. Attending parties lead to working them and eventually to djing. He played his first warehouse in 1996 and spent the next 10 years djing and producing some of San Francisco’s most infamous parties and club nights.

"Gold Code" was initially founded as a music blog in 2007. The site showcased past, present, and future classics and as well as his personal edits and dj mixes. 

In 2009, he focused his efforts on music production and a live show. He adopting "Gold Code" as his moniker and debuted a well-received live set at the celebrated “As You Like It” parties. Remixes soon followed for Nude Photo Music and SubSensory labels culminating with his debut release, "The Day After" with remixes by Audioelectronic, Basskittens, Chris Fierenze, and Jonah Sharp.

2015 brought a move back to Southern California and a radio show, OMAKASE. Currently airing every Sunday from 6-8 pm [Pacific] on 88.9, KUCI Irvine, and streaming online at www.kuci.org, OMAKASE showcases the art of mixing past, present, and future classics.
