I really love the techstep drum n' bass sound of the mid to late 90's, so here's another exploration of the more obscure side of this era, focusing on b-sides, remixes and album tracks from some of the scene's best-known names, as well as some more obscure artists. VNNN. has a clear penchant for techno and its contemporary influences. The Essen-based DJ and producer is not only a key team member behind the Stone Techno festival, but is also a long-serving resident at The Third Room events that boasts bookings such as Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, DVS1, for example. He also has appearances at clubs further afield alongside artists such as FJAAK, Floorplan, Dax J, Stef Mendesidis, and Bambounou, to name only a few. His tracks have been released on homestead The Third Room, as well as fellow German label Toolboxxx, and he continues to carve out staunch path collaborating with Ahmet Sisman too. This exclusive mix is trippy from the word go, developing a hugely hypnotic opening that really sets the mood and transports. Thoughtful, twisted and expertly curated, the half way point delicately turns the groove knobs up a touch as he finishes off in style by introducing some more stomping grooves and jackin' cuts with some deeper, atmospheric vibes for good measure. Abstract Mechanisms is a sublabel of Mexico's leading techno imprint, Illegal Alien. Also run by Ricardo Garduno, it has featured contributions by Jonas Kopp, Ruman, Singular Anomalies, Yrsen, and Mari Mattham.

The new four-track EP 'Solitary State' is by Decoder, a much loved American artist from Dallas who has released on Jeff Mills' Axis Records, Amotik Records, TWR72's Float, Edit Select Records, Molecular Recordings, and Science Cult, amongst others.

For this DT:Premiere we selected "Phantom 4" with a deep and introspective sound. Dancing modular tones set the muted and gentle atmosphere around the stuttering kick and tinkering hats for a joyful sonic trip into space.

In mid-2020, the Tech Itch camp started sending emails teasing Moving Shadow-related action. It was a bright spot in the darkness of the pandemic, which was in many ways about things ending. This was something starting, or picking up a thread long abandoned. Moving Shadow, the most important dnb label of the '90s, trailed off in the 00s for any number of reasons.

Over/Shadow 01 dropped in November 2020, somewhat innocently with Blame's Lift Off/Star Traveller, tracks clearly made circa '96-'99. But unlike many pandemic-era DAT unearthing projects, the label then looked ahead. Since then, O/S has featured both Moving Shadow alumni (Dom & Roland, Technical Itch, Nookie, Flytronix) and current artists building on their legacy (ASC, Detboi, Abstract Drumz, Nectax).

5 years is both a short and a long time. In dnb, it's long, enough to build what I think of as a center. The music has countless branches now, some far removed from its roots. Over/Shadow has bridged the past with the future with intention and authenticity - no cash grab remixes, no publicity stunts. The label's confidence shows in its high number of two-track 12" releases. Today's profusion of music and high pressing costs have made four-track releases the norm. It's a statement now for a label to say, here are two tracks, they are enough.

This mix had to start with "Lift Off", but I had no preconceived notions otherwise. Fairly quickly an arrangement suggested itself: a warmup first third, a banging middle, a deeper last movement. The quiet winner here is DJ Trax, with 20% of the track list - 3 solo tracks and 2 collabs as Mixrace with Paradox.

These 25 tunes (and one tease) present just one path through the already considerable O/S discography. They omit a good number of anthems and great releases - a completely different track list would be just as valid. (In fact, there's probably a non-dnb mix lurking in the catalogue.) This is just my snapshot of Over/Shadow right now. That was what Moving Shadow excelled at back in the day, documenting the music. We are fortunate that Over/Shadow has carried on this work.

I had the idea to start an own podcast series for quite a while now but I was a bit afraid to be honest. I wanted to keep it in a radio show format, as this is the format I grew up with and this was how I’ve discovered music. Also I wanted to do something different as I have a pretty wide range in music which I like. I get influenced by so many things so I thought it might be interesting for you to take this platform as the concept for a podcast. I will dig deeper and deeper through my collection of records and present it to you each month. It doesn’t matter how new or old the music is, it’s just about creating a good vibe to listen to, to enter another dimension.

Moreover the idea is also to invite guests, in irregular intervals - people I respect for what they are doing music wise and for the culture.
