The journey begins in the valley, where instinct guides the first steps. There is no plan, only a
feeling - to leave the car behind and follow the nearest path upwards. The trail leads through a forest drenched in moss, damp earth underfoot, and the quiet breath of pines shading the way.
It is a beginning wrapped in stillness, as if the mountain itself is waiting.

As the ascent grows steeper, the landscape opens little by little. Between the trees, sudden
windows of light reveal sweeping views of the surrounding hills, endless forests stretching
across the horizon. Each pause carries a sense of wonder, the climb itself becoming part of
the rhythm. The higher the path winds, the lighter the heart becomes, as though every step
pulls the spirit closer to something timeless.

Near the summit, a hidden cave emerges. From the outside, it seems small and unassuming - but inside, it unfolds into a vast, otherworldly chamber. Stalactites and stalagmites form silent sculptures, while the last glow of the setting sun pours through the entrance, bathing the stone in a magical light. It feels like stepping into a secret only nature can hold, a moment of awe suspended in time.

This EP carries those impressions into sound - the quiet beginning in the valley, the momentum of ascent, and the luminous mystery discovered at the peak. A translation of fleeting beauty into rhythm and tone, held like an echo of the mountain itself.

For OUEMS Mix #019, we have Oxford-based Wotunaz and Sines of Change as part of their newly-formed collective Port of Call, providing us with a lush 60-minute mix that glides through syncopated, atmospheric percussion and immersive reverb-soaked ambience. 

The mix reflects the duo’s move to deep psychedelic dance music - shifting away from their previous focus on high-energy 90s UK dance and Global South genres, and the banality of the many mainstream contemporary electronic spaces. Sines of Change, founder of the Oxford club night ‘Gro-FM’, infuses into the mix his passion for soundsystem music and leftfield electronica, while Wotunaz aims to emulate the campfire drum-circle sound of underground, journey-focused European hubs like Scandinavia and Spain. The result is a firmly club-ready piece which maintains an intricacy and textural hypnoticism equally suitable for thoroughly enjoyable headphone listening too. 

We are eased into the set with the seamlessly interwoven soft synth flourishes of Etch’s ‘Liz’s Track’ and Synkro’s ‘King’s Chamber’. The off-beat drum textures of DJ Ojo slice through the ambience, before Olorun’s ‘Unexpected Pearls’ steadies the beat and guides us softly but surely into club territory. Picking up the tempo with Beatrice Dillon and Call Super’s seminal Hessle Audio release ‘Fluo’, the set settles into an ambient techno groove, peppered with dub-inspired, heavily processed vocal interjections and asymmetric percussion hits.

As we hit half-way, the soaring, delay-riddled arpeggios of Cameo Blush introduce a new movement, defined by more melody, intense percussion, and timbral variety. Tension builds big-time with the rolling snares and fizzing synth design of ‘Cave Walk’ by Soreab, before a 303 acid bassline from contemporary electro legend James Shinra creeps in, subtly hammering away, a nod to the duo’s 90s-inspired dance music background. In the set’s last quarter, the dub influence persists while the ambience returns to the fore, skipping through the minimalist, haunting tones of Sub Basics’ ‘Basement’ before the fluttering melodies of Yushh guide us out. Port of Call bend and warp its pitch, ending the set on that haunting, ambient note so central to the duo’s refined sound. 

The pair, among others, are launching a new project out of Oxford/London focusing on this more long-form, subtle and hypnotic dance music. Tired of increasingly commercial EDM, their aim is to build a passionate and like-minded dance floor, and their OUEMS mix is a perfect showcase. Producers and DJs - message to get involved!

Chris Liebing is synonymous with techno. His legacy is long assured, but his craft never stops evolving. Whether as label head, podcast curator, DJ or producer, he continues to challenge himself and his audience to explore new realms in the electronic world. And often ahead of the curve, too, from the early, hard-edged and loopy 90s sound which is back en vogue today, through his more stripped-back turn of the millennium minimalism and onto the cinematic atmospheres and broader alternative electronica of his latest albums on Mute. It's no stretch to say, then, that Chris Liebing's story is closely connected to the story of techno itself. 

Liebing is considered a global techno ambassador, but his ambitious album projects and direct club tracks excite and innovate as much as any new school star. A proudly forward-thinking attitude ensures that is the case as his DJ tools and studio setup constantly evolve. He continues to be an early adopter of emerging technology, too, just as he was with vinyl controllers, Traktor and when leading the way with full hybrid/live DJing. 

These days, Liebing incorporates an ever wider sphere of sound into his own work. After an eight-year break from full lengths, 2018's Burn Slow on Mute was a creative rebirth that received critical acclaim and confounded all expectations. It was a melancholic mediation on gothic moods, looming apocalyptic landscapes and optimistic broken-beat techno that drew from his childhood love of Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and the New Romantic movement. 

Remixes for Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp followed alongside a collaborative single with Charlotte De Witte, and 2021 brought a second album on Mute, Another Day. It found Liebing exploring all new ways of expressing both his euphoric and melodic side, all with high-grade technical skill and meticulous sonic craft with a range of collaborators from Miles Cooper Seaton to Polly Scattergood. This exceptional form continued into 2023 as he returned to the club with his Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP on CLR, a passionate and politically charged call to the dance floor that joined Liebing and Luke Slater’s remix of Depeche Mode’s iconic ‘Ghosts Again’ in the first half of the year. 

Born in Giessen and active ever since the 1990s, Liebing has always platformed the talent around him as much as himself: a long time before they were commonplace, he famously helmed his own CLR podcast. For many years, it was the scene's most influential series, with a who's who of international pioneers at the helm. After that came the equally important AM/FM radio show, but now following a hiatus, the CLR podcast is back and pushing a fresh techno agenda, as is his iconic label of the same name.

In its first chapter, CLR stood for Chris Liebing Records, then Create Learn Realize, and now Create Learn Repeat - a subtle evolution that is at the heart of everything Liebing does. The label will always be synonymous with exciting techno and is now back hosting parties and festival stages. 

Though his music is underpinned by pulsating menace and a stomping sense of drama, Liebing himself is friendly with a famous smile. It is the music that motivates him and the freedom that comes with increased experience. These days there are no limits, no expectations, but a continued love for the art and craft of techno that is taking him down all new creative pathways.

Harknee is a DJ and producer exploring the intersection between techno music and the natural world.

This exploration sees him take elements of nature, from quiet birdsong to large landscapes, and incorporate them into his work, generating a contrast between repetitive rhythms and the unpredictability of the living world. His creations look to evoke the essence of the earth to create sonic landscapes, placing the listener in the midst of flora and fauna.

He runs a mix series called Biophilia, where he showcases this exploration of techno music and nature and encourages listeners to seek out the beauty of the natural world.
