Chaos in color

I got into a little trouble... I was working security for the Sunday Scaries - Sun Sequence Pool Party at the X last weekend and was asked if I wanted to play a set at the Fillmore in a week's time... 

The thought scared me, so of course I said yes... And for the last week I have frantically been gathering a set together and trying to find some CDJs to practice on... (Thanks Mark and Dustin for setting up the practice sesh and asking me to play)

Well, I'm really happy I took the plunge... It has been 10 years since I've played anywhere in public, but I re-kindled the joy that got me into mixing way back in 09' and I am fully hooked again. 

This live set is pretty rough around the edges, so please be kind and constructive in the comment section, but I hope I'll have an opportunity to play again in the future and hone my craft.

I really love all genres of tunes, so this set is just a love letter to the last 15 years of experiences that have shaped my life. It's missing the first 6 minutes, and this is a replay the following day, so pardon the abrupt entry, but my goal was to start at 70BPM and end up in the 150 range. I hope to play some more sets in the future! -

I’ve been actively listening, learning, and fascinated with the concept of warping the sound of time, skillfully transitioning large bpm ranges, allowing space for full tracks to shine and become familiar to the listener, and being able to navigate various emotions with intentional track selection and placement in a set. I’ve been especially inspired by these artists with how they journey the listener and flow through energy in their sets. 

I’m really proud of myself for this mix. As I started to prep, I was a little worried, because I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to play. It took me a hot minute to find my inspiration, which was then followed by a handful of sleepless nights leading up to the event trying to piece it all together. It’s truthfully kinda surprising to me how it ended up coming together in a way that I really am proud of. That’s cool though, because I feel like I executed exactly what I had been inspired to create. And that just so happens to be a pretty neat personal experience for me. 

Anywayyy, this somehow turned into a journal entry, so if you’re here reading this, thank you for being here. And if it’s me here, re-reading this someday in the future, hi. I love you. Remember to be present. Remember to love. Remember to breathe deeper. Remember that it’s important to create for yourself, trust yourself, and to say yes even when you’re scared. You got this. 🖤
