On The Midday Break Room, Sara Lomax narrated a panel featuring members from the network of URL Media (Uplift, Respect, Love): a media organization that is dedicated to providing more economic viability for media organizations serving Black and Brown communities. 

The panel included S. Mitra Kalita, the co-founder of URL Media. Garry Pierre-Pierre,  the founder and publisher of The Haitian Times, a leading publication that bridges the Haitian diaspora and highlights issues impacting global Black communities. Levi Rickert, the editor and publisher of Tribal Business News and the founder, publisher, and editor of Native News Online. And Krystal Villeda,  the Chief Operating Officer of “Pulso”, a nonprofit media outlet whose mission is to increase the political power of the projected 36 million eligible Latino voters in the United States.

During the panel, they all discussed the state of Black and Brown communities under this current political regime, and what their organizations are doing to further assist and uplift their communities.

Saving Democracy From Fascism

In this episode of The Language of Power, Paul Taylor, Senior Visiting Fellow at the European Policy Centre, explores the global backsliding of liberal democracy and asks whether it is losing its anchor.

Once seen as the inevitable “end of history,” democratic progress has stalled and reversed in many countries, including the United States, which now faces internal democratic erosion and a growing embrace of strongman regimes abroad. Joining Paul to discuss these trends and their implications are Amanda Sloat, Professor of International Relations at IE University and former Senior Director for Europe at the U.S. National Security Council, and Richard Youngs, Senior Fellow at Carnegie Europe and co-founder of the European Democracy Hub. Together, they examine the drivers of democratic decline, the role of technology and AI, prospects for resilience, and lessons from the Global South on sustaining democratic norms.

The Language of Power: Liberal democracy under threat around the world

Randy: “We’re supposed to believe the central bank manages inflation by using interest rates?”

Steve: “It’s ridiculous.”

L. Randall Wray, one of the original MMT economists, recently wrote a paper with Yeva Nersisyan entitled, No, the Fed is NOT Independent – It is a Creature of Congress.  Steve invited Randy for a conversation about how the Federal Reserve is, and always has been, a “creature of Congress,” and its supposed independence is a smokescreen that benefits the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us.

The Fed has a dual mandate of full employment and price stability, yet it consistently prioritizes the stability of Wall Street over the well-being of Main Street, bailing out banks while leaving workers to face the fallout of manufactured recessions.

Randy describes how raising interest rates – the Fed’s so-called tool – works to suppress wages by slowing the economy and killing job growth. Federal Reserve transcripts explicitly state that they fear “wage inflation” but see “profit inflation” as desirable.

Randy wants Congress to take control of the central bank. (Some of us don’t see Congress as independent either.) But whatever our belief in the role of the state and who it serves, the episode contains valuable information on central bank operations, how interest rate hikes discipline labor, the truth about “fighting” inflation, and the difference between monetary and fiscal policy. We need to understand the mechanics of power if we’re going to build the future we deserve.

L. Randall Wray is a Professor of Economics at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, and Emeritus Professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is one of the developers of Modern Money Theory and his newest book on the topic is Understanding Modern Money Theory: Money and Credit in Capitalist Economies (Elgar, 2025).
