In the latest episode of the Sanctions Space Podcast, Justine is joined by Craig Timm, Senior Director of Anti-Money Laundering at ACAMS. They discuss key takeaways from the Global Sanctions Summit at ACAMS Hollywood, the role the US Department of Justice plays in the sanctions enforcement ecosystem, for example through fines and asset forfeiture, and how its focus is expected to evolve through increasing focus on enablers, ramping up of enforcement actions, and more.
In Craig’s role at ACAMS, he oversees government, law enforcement, and private sector engagement in the United States and works to drive collaboration across the global anti-financial crime space. Prior to joining ACAMS, Craig had more than 15 years of anti-financial crime experience across the public and private sectors. At the Department of Justice, Craig served as a Deputy Chief in the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section (now Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section) at headquarters in Washington, DC. In that role, he led a team of prosecutors responsible for enforcing criminal violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, U.S. economic sanctions, and money laundering laws committed by financial institutions and their employees. He led the prosecution of some of the largest financial institutions in the world including HSBC and BNP Paribas.

Apple pulls AI feature. After a series of blunders with its AI-powered news and entertainment notification summary, Apple has decided to temporarily halt the feature. Critics, including the reputable BBC News, labeled the summary tool as “a danger to the public's right to reliable information.” In response, Apple plans to make changes, such as indicating when notifications are AI-generated, introducing a beta label, and allowing users to disable it for specific apps. Users may breathe a sigh of relief knowing that these summaries will now appear in italics, but one can't help but wonder if this should have been the case from the start.

Snapchat AI harmful to young users? The Federal Trade Commission in the United States has referred a complaint against Snap and its AI chatbot, My AI, to the Department of Justice. While the details remain vague, the commission raised concerns about risks associated with My AI for younger users. Snap has pushed back, alleging the complaint lacks evidence and could hinder innovation. This situation raises serious questions about the safety implications of AI technologies on social media platforms, especially when it comes to minors.

Mistral inks huge content partnership. In an exciting move, the French start-up, Mistral, known for its AI chatbot Le Chat, has entered a multi-year partnership with Agence France-Presse. This agreement grants Mistral access to AFP's extensive catalog of news stories, estimated at two thousand three hundred daily. The partnership aims to enhance the accuracy of Mistral’s AI, ensuring responses are verified by professionals, which is a huge move toward responsible AI development.
