A Soldiers Story

I smell anise, the musk that we secrete
     with longing, leather and moss. I find a trace

     Am I imagining the wet scent of peat	
and cedar, oud, impossible to erase?
     For weeks, I breathe his body in the sheet—
crushed pepper—although perhaps discreet,
     difficult for someone else to place.

The Long Deployment

The poem this song is based on was written for my wife, Lt. Col. Debbie Sterling.  Written from the heart during Operation Desert Storm, LONELY is a tribute to the sacrifice, faith, and enduring love shared between a deployed wife and mother and the family waiting at home.

The song captures the raw emotions of distance—days that feel empty, nights that seem longer—and the unshakable bond that keeps love alive across thousands of miles. With every verse, LONELY reminds us that true love is stronger than fear, distance, or time apart.

Finally got around to rewriting it into a song this year (2025) as a tribute to my lovely wife.

Wrote these lyrics as a poem back in 1990-1991 for my wife while she was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm / Desert Shield. Separated by distance but bound together in love and faith, the words came from a place of gratitude — for her sacrifice, her devotion, and the blessing of walking through life together.

I adapted the original poem to the lyrics in this song in 2025.  This song is a country ballad of love, faith, and thankfulness, capturing what it means to stand by one another through trials, distance, and time. More than just a song, it’s a testimony of God’s blessing in marriage and the unshakable bond of two hearts.

If you’ve ever loved someone from afar, or held on to faith through the miles, I hope this song speaks to you.

Originally from a small town in west Texas. Growing up my dad moved us around a lot usually ever 3-4 years Until I was 16 when I moved out. I was always into sports as a kid. I started playing youth Football (Pop warner) and Baseball when I was 6. My older brother got me into Hip-Hop and Punk Rock around the same time. I started racing dirt bikes (Motocross) when I was 11/12 and it's the only sport that I am still active in. I started really getting into music when I was 15 and started teaching myself how to play guitar and how to write music, and I went full on Punk Rock. 
At 26 I decided to join the Army and shipped to Basic 3 days before my 27th birthday. After 7 years of service and a Combat deployment I was Medically Retired in 2014. 
For the last 10 years the two things that kept me from taking that ride down the Sewer Slide is Moto and Music. Music kept me going as a Youth, Kept me Pushing though Iraq and at home when all hell was breaking loose in my life. Racing is for fun and keeps me grounded, but Music is my Life line. My first release "Ode to the TEP" is my first release but not my usual genre but it brings me back to one of the bands that kept me motivated while deployed. If you can guess the Band, bonus points for you. and it's not that hard to guess...

Healthcare worker and retired combat veteran.  I'm finally putting music to 30 years of collected stories that question the boundaries of ultimate success and total failure. Give me me a guitar, bottle of whiskey, and a campfire; I’ll narrate a life that no book would ever dare to write.

Most of my music centers on Jesus Christ and God’s amazing grace. I primarily write in the Country Christian style, but every now and then I like to branch out when the mood strikes. You might hear touches of alternative Christian rock (I did grow up in the ’60s and ’70s), contemporary gospel, or even a hint of bluegrass gospel along the way. From time to time, I also step outside faith-based music into modern bluegrass or country.

One of my current projects is an album inspired by poems I wrote to my wife while she was deployed during Desert Storm in 1991. After all these years, I’m finally adapting them into songs — a project that’s been close to my heart for decades.

I was fortunate to play bass and sometimes piano in my late teens and early twenties for a country gospel group known as The Gospel Crusaders. We performed primarily at churches across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Then life happened, and I stepped away from performing for almost 50 years. During this time, I started focusing more on writing lyrics and music. In 2017, I picked up my mandolin and joined God’s Country in Largo, Florida. The group disbanded in 2023 when several members moved out of state, but we’re planning a reunion performance in 2026.

Even when I venture beyond my main focus of sharing the gospel through song, I strive to keep my lyrics honest, heartfelt, and sometimes just plain fun. Believe it or not, I’m not in this to make money — I write as an outlet to share the stories and experiences of life over the past 70 years. I write the lyrics for most of my songs, though I’ve been blessed to collaborate with a few talented friends along the way.

I use Studio One to produce my music and have built a large library of loops over the years. Some vocals are mine; others are performed by friends. And yes, I also use AI-generated voices or enhancements to vocals when needed.  I am in my 7th decade on earth and my voice doesn’t have the range it once had, plus I don’t have immediate access to female vocalists.  There’s a lot of debate about AI in music, but for me, the goal has never changed — to spread God’s love and joy. Technology is simply a tool, much like the studio innovations that have shaped music for the past fifty years.

In today’s music, many well-known and touring artists now use pre-recorded tracks and digital stems during live concerts to fill out harmonies, recreate orchestral parts, or trigger sound effects — it’s all part of modern performance. Whether it’s a backing track on stage or an AI vocal line in the studio, the heart behind the music still matters most.

I don’t believe AI will ever replace real musicians, but those who learn to embrace it and use it to enhance their craft will continue to flourish in the music industry.

I play bass, trumpet, guitar, piano, mandolin, and I’m currently working to get up to speed on the fiddle. You may not agree with my take on AI, and that’s okay. My purpose isn’t profit — it’s to share the message of God’s love through whatever tools I have, whether that’s a guitar, a loop, or an algorithm that helps me clean up a mix.

As W. Edwards Deming once said,
“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.”

Technology will keep evolving, and so will we. My greatest hope is that one of these songs touches someone’s heart or makes a difference in their life. If God can use even one of them to do that, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.

Emily, a pop/rock/adult contemporary singer/songwriter from northern California, has been writing songs since her teens, and singing as long as she can remember. After releasing her self-titled EP (2004) and full length La La Land (2008), she tucked her music away and focused on raising her family. In 2021, after the world had taken a dramatic turn, she returned to the craft, and subsequently, the recording studio. In 2022, Emily released the single The Door is Always Open. Then, in 2023, she released the singles Infinitely (featured on GoodDay Sacramento) and Anybody But You, both preludes to her upcoming album, Love, Emily, a relatable collection of love letters to family, which will include updated versions of the previously released tracks. Also slated for release in 2024 is the cozy Christmas single, If You’re Not Here. Emily feels fortunate to have worked alongside gifted LA producer/multi-instrumentalist Dan Marfisi over the past two decades, and honored that cellist Cameron Stone (Game of Thrones) has graced two of her tracks, Life is Funny  (La La Land ), and So Loved, from the upcoming Love, Emily.
