#128 - Ecce Romani

For this episode along with my guest will be dissecting Derek Jarman’s historical, religious, but ultimately queer debut Sebastiane.  

Released in 1976, is set in a sun drenched rocky coast line of the Mediterranean island of Sardinian. With a dialogue entirely in Latin, Sebastiane tells the story of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.

The film is not a biopic by any means but more of a queer BDSM interpretation of this biblical story. The film, was seen as one of the first unlicensed ‘underground’ queer films, which was allowed into the public spaces of commercial cinema and television and one that featured positive images of gay sexuality, in comparison to previously released queer films. But also, interestingly it was also the first ever film passed by the British Board of Film Censors that depicted an erect penis.

To talk to me about the film, I invited along film critic and writer Robert Stinner. It’s a  conversation I very much enjoyed where we able to discuss in depth the films audacious homoeroticism, its timelessness and its influence on future queer filmmaking.

EPISODE 25: Sebastiane - Interview with writer Robert Stinner

Family Tree was commissioned to air as part of BLINDSIDE Gallery's day radio program HOUSE-HOLD, curated by Josephine Mead and Rosa Spring Voss, on 7th December 2024. A collaboration between the artists Abbra Kotlarczyk and Briony Galligan, this audio essay expands upon email correspondence around the artists' shared artistic research into family trees and features readings and archival audio of the artists' children: Ettael, Kitaj and Elio. It features discussion of key works of art and poetry, including Archie Moore's 'Kith and Kin', John Ashbery's 'Some Trees', alongside the work and thinking of Derek Jarman, Joyelle McSweeney and others. Recorded and composed on Wurundjeri Land in Victoria, so-called Australia.

Family Tree

Unavailable for almost 30 years in its own right, this collection from the Cold Spring archive has been repackaged and remastered with new art. This classic album exists as a document of the soundtrack work PSYCHIC TV created for the many films and videos of Derek Jarman. Another demonstration of why PSYCHIC TV were one of the most important groups in the world.

The titular track, 'Prayer For Derek', is intended as an invocationary prayer, based on Tibetan rituals; a collage of sounds including field recordings of the lulling waves running aground on the shingle beach opposite Jarman's Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent alongside bird song, crying babies, and massed ritualised chants to aid the late film director in his after-life journeys.

Other tracks feature elongated drones, washes of dissonance, melancholic guitar chime, evocative piano scoring, Burroughs cut-ups, gothic chants, and familiar snarling gods.
