A deep and dark song about sorrow and sadness. Initially written on piano, I decided to add dissonances and abstract soundscapes. I am very happy that Michael leaned into the dark theme and wrote sparse lyrics with a lot of meaning in between the words.

I grew up listening to my dad's records in the '70s. Darkness on the Edge of Town, Who's Next, Zep IV. As an '80s teen, I became fascinated by rap music & loved Run DMC, but also consumed significant doses of Metallica. Pretty typical midwestern kid.

In my 20s, I was living in Iowa City, not working because I was just about to move to Santa Fe when my old college friend Michelle Rubin called with a mini-emergency & asked if I could go deliver some newspapers for the weekly ICON. I was busy packing up, but had plenty of time so said "sure". After I'd finished filling the vending machines around town, she handed me a couple tickets to a Paul K show at Gabe's later that night.

I didn't plan to go, but said thanks & went home & got back to packing. But as the evening wore on & I had a few beers, I figured I might as well take a break & go check it out, so I walked downtown.

With all apologies to Mr. K, I don't remember any of the music from that night except for two songs. He introduced them by saying he had just been at the wake for a recently deceased musician named Townes Van Zandt. I'd never heard of the guy before, but those next two cover songs, Lungs & Our Mother the Mountain changed my life. I walked out of there in a daze of wonderment. The universe had just opened up & played me some music that was exactly how I'd always wished music sounded, just didn't know it till right then.

I spent the next couple decades trying to play Townes songs & failing miserably. But the extended accumulation of all that determined failure, mixed in with a penchant for Surrealist poetry, Dylan harmonica, & John Lee Hooker's foot stomping added up to where I'm at right now. A quirky songwriter who mixes in Townes covers, spoken word pieces, & lotsa foot stomping with a little harp now & then. I'm really only just getting started as a performer & recording artist even though I'm in my 50s. Took me a while to put the pieces together, but better late than never!

Music takes me to new worlds. Life is the best teacher. Writing about life is a challenge and experience is what guides me. Loves, pains, disappointments, sadness, joy, despair, hope, melancholy, happiness, all these feelings burn in my veins and make me create.

Rob Barnhardt is a word nerd, irrational numbers enthusiast, avid disestablishmentarian, penny ante poker phenom and notorious sleep-aholic who sometimes dreams in Rock ‘n’ Roll. His parents were the star attraction in a daring high wire act that famously worked without a net. Both died while he was still young. He was sent to his grandmother's brothel where he was raised by prostitutes. Encouraged by a Jesuit priest, he taught himself guitar at 13, becoming an accomplished classical guitarist. He was high school valedictorian and went off to Julliard on a music scholarship. He kept a revolver and a rattlesnake in his dorm room, supplementing his scholarship with money he made selling drugs. He took advantage of the many parties at Juilliard and would often show up to them naked. He got kicked out of school for running an illegal numbers game and became an ambulance driver, hustling pool and playing in a jazz combo on the side. He met and fell in love with an Atlantic City showgirl on an ocean liner when he was 27. They jumped ship and married in Istanbul, exploring Eastern mythology and the occult while on their honeymoon. On a party dare gone awry, he fatally shot his new bride while attempting an ill conceived version of William Tell, missing the shot glass placed atop her head and instead shooting her in the eye. After serving seven years hard labor for manslaughter, he escaped from a Romanian prison and stole away on a southbound freighter. He found himself in Brisbane, living in a motel and living hand to mouth, furiously writing songs and drinking heavily. Between sporadic bar gigs, he took odd jobs at shipyards and funeral homes. He never remarried, preferring one night stands and prostitutes to a committed monogamous relationship. At this writing, he lives a hermit-like existence in a sparsely furnished farmhouse East of Omaha. And when he does venture out for musical engagements, he usually wants to be back at home.

Hailing from Orlando, Florida, iLLheiGHt emerged from the vibrant electronic music scene of the mid-90s, where the sounds of Florida Breaks and the energy of the rave culture left an indelible mark on his artistry. Performing as DJ Haze-eee, he built a reputation for his eclectic style, earning a residency at Orlando’s legendary Alpha Bar and sharing stages with icons like Druid, Rick West, Code Rising, and many other well-known Central Florida and Florida Breaks scene DJ characters.

Now, with over two decades of musical exploration, IllheiGHt channels his experience into crafting tracks that transcend genre boundaries. While his music often leans toward House and Breaks, he thrives on pushing the envelope—blending diverse influences to create fresh, immersive, and unpredictable electronic soundscapes. His creative philosophy resists confinement to any single genre, ensuring his music stays as dynamic as the listeners who inspire it.
