With so much suffering in ourselves and the world, how do we shift from reactive and hurtful responses to ones that are healing and connecting? What is needed in order for us to come home to this body, mind and heart? How do we become a refuge for ourselves and the world? In this talk we explore how this practice helps us to turn towards what is challenging with an intention of healing and opening our hearts and in doing this we reconnect with kindness and wisdom.

People always ask if meditation practice makes us passive and withdrawn. This creates  binary of one or the other - action vs non-action. This talk explores this misunderstanding and how we can relate with wisdom to the value of action and non-action in our lives and practice. 

The Wisdom of Action and Non-Action

Awakening with Breath and Presence

The New Direction  

Through vanishing old road,
Through hail-like dust storm,
It stings and scratches,
Stuffy, I cannot breathe.

Here once walked my ancestors,
I was told by the old ones,
One can dig at the very spot,
And find forgotten implements.

Wasting no time I urged on,
Where I'd stop I knew not,

People often want to engage with the vast mystery of life through something that seems concrete, even if its only an idea. This can be helpful and provide a doorway in. The potential trap is if we become attached to the form of the mystery and lose the spaciousness of not knowing. 

Engaging with the Mystery of Life

It is enticing to think of uncomfortable aspects of our lives as reaching closure a state of closure or completion. But the reality is often messier and it can be an impediment to practice if we resist what’s actually arising, we think it’s a mistake, or we believe we have to aggressively fix it through practice. But there is a way to letting go that is not aggressive or forceful and allows for patience and compassion.
