Στις 25 Απριλίου 1974, η Επανάσταση των Γαρυφάλλων ανέτρεψε το καθεστώς του Estado Novo (Νέο Κράτος) στην Πορτογαλία. Η επαναστατική διετία (1974-1975) περιλάμβανε σημαντικές πολιτικές και κοινωνικές αλλαγές, και είχε ως αποτέλεσμα το τέλος των αποικιακών πολέμων, τη διεξαγωγή δημοκρατικών εκλογών και το νέο, πολύ προοδευτικό Σύνταγμα του 1976. Στην Ισπανία, τον Νοέμβριο του 1975 τον θάνατο του δικτάτορα Φρ. Φράνκο ακολούθησε η έναρξη μιας συναινετικής και ελεγχόμενης, από το ίδιο το καθεστώς, διαδικασίας εκδημοκρατισμού. Η ισπανική Μεταπολίτευση (Transición) βασίστηκε στην ιδέα μιας “νέας αρχής” και μιας “συμφωνίας λήθης” του παρελθόντος. Στην τελευταία εκπομπή του αφιερώματος “50 χρόνια Μεταπολίτευση” ο Μάνος Αυγερίδης συζητάει με τον Κωστή Κορνέτη, επίκουρο καθηγητή Σύγχρονης Ιστορίας στο Αυτόνομο Πανεπιστήμιο της Μαδρίτης, για την ιστορία των δύο μακροχρόνιων δικτατορικών καθεστώτων της ιβηρικής χερσονήσου και των αντίστοιχων δημοκρατικών μεταβάσεων της δεκαετίας του 1970. Μεταβάσεις παράλληλες και πολύ διαφορετικές, τόσο μεταξύ τους, όσο και με την ελληνική Μεταπολίτευση του 1974.

As Syrian rebels advanced on Damascus in a surprise lightning offensive, the Rojava Kurds seized territory from the Bashar Assad regime, and the Druze took up arms in their own region. After years of the lines in the conflict being frozen and the genocidal Assad dictatorship being "normalized," on Dec. 8 the unthinkable happened and the dictator fled. Suddenly the 13-year aim of the Syrian Revolution has been realized—the fall of the regime. But the lead rebel faction, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has an ugly past, its partner the Syrian National Army (SNA) is in the political orbit of Turkish aspiring dictator Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the threat of Arab-Kurdish ethnic war in northern Syria looms closer. Amid a conflict now dominated by armed actors, can the unarmed civil resistance that began the revolution 13 years ago re-assert itself, and revive the secular-democratic spirit of 2011? In Episode 255 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg takes a hard look.

US-directed repression and counter-insurgency in El Salvador in the 1980s allowed the imposition of "free trade" or "neoliberal" regimes in the generations since then—ultimately culminating in the adoption of CAFTA. This, in turn, has exacerbated the expropriation of the traditional lands of the peasantry by the agro-export oligarchy. It also led to the hypertlophy of the narco economy and a new nightmare of violence, which Nayib Bukele has exploited to establish a new dictatorship. This dictatorship is now openly in league with Donald Trump, and has in fact become critical to his fascist agenda. In Episode 275 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg breaks down El Salvador's historical role as a laboratory of genocide and police-state methods for US imperialism, and the imperative of trans-national resistance.

Some are drawing an ominous analogy between Charlie Kirk and Horst Wessel, the early martyr of the Nazi cause. In Episode 296 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg offers a more ominous analogy still: to José Calvo Sotelo, the Spanish fascist leader whose assassination in 1936 provided the expedience for Generalissimo Franco's coup d'etat that initiated the Spanish Civil War—and ultimately brought a decades-long dictatorship to Spain. Trump's declaration of antifa as a "terrorist organization" since Kirk's assassination is an open acknowledgement of his fascist intent. Fortunately, anti-fascist protesters are repudiating Kirk, and the wave of racist terror and anti-left reaction now being unleashed coast to coast.
