This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient Stoic philosopher Seneca's Letters, this one looking at Letter 59, in which Seneca distinguishes between the senses that ordinary people and Stoics give to the terms pleasure (voluptas) and joy (gaudium), and discusses why it is that most people go wrong in the views they have about what will produce genuine joy for them, by contrast to the Stoic sage, who is able to enjoy lasting joy.

This soulful blues-folk track follows a restless search for purpose that ends not in distant horizons but in a hidden jewel within. Its chorus—“joy ain’t ending suffering, but knowing your true name”—captures a sudden, electrifying recognition of an ever-present wholeness. A song of rapturous awakening, it invites listeners to feel that rush of pure aliveness and remember: you were never broken—you’re already whole.
