I recently purchased "The Mirror of My Heart," a book full of poetry written by Persian women over a period of a thousand years. Quite a few lines inspired new material, but none more deliciously than the words of Jahan Malek Khatun, a 14th century poet from Shiraz, who begins one stunning piece with: "I am still drunk that you were here, and you were mine / And once again I stretch my hand out for that wine," and ends another with "From now on I renounce renunciations." (Translations by Dick Davis). Her divan contains over 1500 poems and they are all gorgeous. Reflecting on her words and some stories I've heard from dear friends brought me this piece, which I've been playing incessantly for some time. I often find myself struggling with the demands of adherence to doctrine and propriety as a religious leader with a dervish heart. Music like this helps me feel more in balance.

"King Unas Lives" is on my album, "Divan", which has songs inspired by ancient historical documents - in this case, hieroglyphics. King Unas was the ninth and last ruler of the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, and reigned for 15 to 30 years in the mid-24th century BCE, until his death in 2345 BCE. Pharaoh Unas was the first pharaoh to have the incantations for his voyage after death inscribed on the walls of his tomb. When his burial chamber in his pyramid complex in Saqqara, Egypt, was opened in 1881, the inner walls were found covered in hieroglyphics of incantations; engraved and filled in with paint that was still blue after more than 4,000 years. I based the spoken lyrics of this song on a few lines of those incantations. The song has a distinctly Middle-Eastern sound. Bassist and sound engineer: Luke Garfield of Banana Llama Studios. It became a mania, a selfless habit, a way of relaxing. I don’t play much, however, for various personal reasons. Research, listening and selection occupy a very large part of my life. It will always be so. I’ve developed a taste for the wonder of it all.

Someone who’s focused on their thing. It’s a commonplace to place a thousand expectations on a dj and turn him or her into a fetish, a vent or an entertainer. 
This can sometimes work, but it’s not my vision.
A successful dj set could be like a well-equipped caravan with which you’d like to embark without knowing the destination. Of course, there’s the invitation to dance, to get drunk and have fun; but it can also be about reconciling the listener with certain emotions, reviving a numbed or misunderstood sensibility.
