1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Dom and I run Miles Away Records. I've been collecting records for 10 or so years now. When I first started collecting records I was properly into northern soul. I remember the first proper record I purchased was a one sided bootleg of The Snake. Since then I've been lucky enough to have been to record shops all over the world from Peru to Berlin. Lots of my records have come via tips and recommendations from people I;ve worked with, record shop owners or my own personal research. I try to buy the majority of my records in record shops as I feel like you get better records that way which you might not have considered before but over the years I've spent a fair amount buying online via discogs and ebay. I have a particular love for soulful music be that soul 45s, jazz, jazz-funk, latin, salsa, rare groove, MPB and of course modern and northern soul and my record collection largely reflects that. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I love 45s. I love being able to take a small box of 45s to a gig over your shoulder. I love the louder cut. The shorter time lengths keeping you on your toes. The price. The label artwork. The house bag. There's just such a simple beauty to them. The original idea of my label Miles Away was to put out soulful 45s from all over the world because of my love for the format. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

The mix consists of recent finds, classics and personal favourites. I wanted this mix to reflect my DJ style and I always prefer mixes which start slower and build up. I tried to keep it flowing as much as possible, blending where I could or chopping in where I thought it was right. I wanted the mix to keep the listener engaged and wondering what was coming next so in the latter end we dip into some Caribbean and salsa records to keep things interesting.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

I have a monthly radio show on Soho Radio. Wednesday 6-8pm UK BST. Every 4 weeks. Aside from that, you can catch me Djing around London and beyond regularly playing at venues such as the Jazz Cafe, The Century Club, BBE Store, Brilliant Corners as well as running my own nights at The Jago club in Dalston.
