This week on "Radio Architecture with Ilana Razbash", Ilana's special guest is Veeral Patel, a Melbourne-based Architectural Photographer and Filmmaker hailing from New Zealand.

His roots can be traced back further across the Pacific Ocean to Fiji. With a background in wireless communications engineering, he moved to Melbourne after the dot com burst. The transition to photography came through a mid-life career crisis that saw him longing to do more than just software development.

Through chance encounters with other entrepreneurs, he had his own Walter Mitty moment, photographing several editions of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in Europe.

Surrounded by the architecture of new and old through his travels in Europe, he was given opportunities in Melbourne to photograph niche development projects.
This opened his eyes to a new avenue of technical and creative imagination, and thus, photographing architecture became his forte.

More recently, he has become a custodian of Robin Boyd’s Noble House.

We discuss documenting the Legacy of California Cannabis. 

Proposition 64, the California cannabis legalization ballot initiative passed in 2016, created cannabis-specific taxes. A portion of these cannabis tax revenues are used to fund cannabis research initiatives through California’s public universities. On April 25th, 2023 the California Department of Cannabis Control awarded $2.7 million dollars to a group of academic researchers, scientists, and community based organizations to develop a multidisciplinary, community-based participatory research (CBPR) study that will identify, document, and help to preserve the history, value, and diversity of California’s legacy cannabis genetics and the communities that steward them.

Genine Coleman is the founder and Executive Director of Origins Council, a nonprofit education, research and policy advocacy organization that serves some 800 members of California’s legacy cannabis growing regions. Origins Council is dedicated to sustainable rural economic development within legacy cannabis producing regions and establishing nationally and internationally recognized, legally defensible, standards-based, geographic indication systems for cannabis. A former grower, Genine has over 20 years of cannabis cultivation experience. In 2012, she stopped cultivating cannabis to take up cannabis patient and policy advocacy. She is the co-founder of the Mendocino Appellations Project, which is now a regionally sponsored project of Origins Council, and serves on the Board of Directors for the 420 Archive which is devoted to collecting, preserving and sharing the history of cannabis culture and prohibition in the United States. Genine is also a founding board member of the Mendocino Cannabis Alliance, formed in 2019. From 2017–2020, she served on the Board of Directors of the California Growers Association.

Points de repère de l'histoire et de l'histoire de l'art du monde grec antique, les sculptures en pierre de Delphes restent paradoxalement méconnues. Découvertes pour l'essentiel lors de la Grande Fouille menée de 1892 à 1903, ces oeuvres – plus de 2 000 fragments – ne sont en effet que partiellement publiées dans les sept volumes de la série des Fouilles de Delphes IV parus entre 1909 et 2003. Ce recueil rassemble ainsi pour la première fois toutes les sculptures en pierre connues à Delphes. Pour certains ensembles, largement inédits, il offre une première publication détaillée : le décor de la Tholos, la « Colonne des Danseuses », les groupes statuaires de Daochos et « du Philosophe », les portraits ou la plastique idéale d'époque impériale. D'autres dossiers ont fait l'objet d'une mise à jour approfondie, en particulier les couros et corès, les caryatides et le décor sculpté des trésors ioniques, le décor des temples doriques d'époque archaïque. Fruit d'un important travail de rangement, d'informatisation et d'analyse mené lors de plusieurs campagnes d'études, cet ouvrage complète et renouvelle notre connaissance de ces sculptures, l'illustrant par une couverture photographique entièrement nouvelle et une vingtaine de dessins originaux.

Jean-Luc Martinez est historien de l'art grec. Agrégé d'histoire, ancien membre de l'École française d'Athènes (1993-1996), il a été conservateur en charge des sculptures grecques antiques au Louvre (1997-2007), directeur du département des Antiquités grecques, étrusques et romaines (2007-2013) et président-directeur (2013-2021) du même musée. Il prépare actuellement la publication du monument de Delphes dit la « Colonne des Danseuses ».

Rekem Records presents an album of field recordings from the village of Philoti, Naxos, in the Cyclades. These recordings by anthropologists Panos Panopoulos and Yorgos Samantas offer us a tangible and pleasurable sonic image of highland Naxos, focusing on a range of acoustic stimuli that touches on the multiple aspects of everyday life, as well as those of ritual space and time, and the dynamic interplay between voices, natural sounds and music.

The material compiled sketches an acoustic profile of the land, in a narrative that presents instances that focus both on the intricate terrain of the soundscape, as well as human sonic interventions, and the resonances and interactions of music with the sonic environment. Throughout this apparent sonic journey, its sounds and their reflections, lies the imprint of the lived experience of space, in all its levels of expression.
