Hello everyone! Here is a video I created on Luis Barraza Robles killing himself and his seven year old son after being involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife Olivia Cuen-Lopez. On Monday, July 10, at or around 4:45 am, local time, the fire department responded to a house that had smoke coming from it. The fire department was not contacted and they responded on their own. Once on scene the fire department made entry finding Luis and his son by the door and Olivia in the bathroom. A further investigation would reveal Luis had set the home on fire after being involved in the dispute. Both Luis and his son were pronounced deceased at the home and Olivia was taken to a nearby hospital. She is in stable condition. 

Here are three questions I have for you. Please keep your comments professional and clean. We do value professional disagreement, but no one should be disrespectful.
1.	Was this intentional by the father?
2.	Why were the police not contacted?

There is a form of domestic violence that has increased since the Dobbs Decision. It is reproductive coercion. What we're talking about  are intimate partner behaviors that interfere with decision-making related to reproductive health meant to maintain power and control. These coercive behaviors infringe on individuals' reproductive rights and reduce their reproductive autonomy. What I’m explicitly discussing is pregnancy coercion, birth control sabotage, and controlling the outcome of a pregnancy.

Today is our first in an upcoming series of interviews with the ladies of the Independent Women’s Forum. On July 1, 2023 Cheryl was inducted as a Visiting Fellow at the IWF, and we want to use this Series to introduce you all to the important and varied work that the IWF does. 

Our guest today is Michele Steeb. Michele is the author of "Answers Behind The RED DOOR: Battling the Homeless Epidemic"

In 2006, Michele joined a struggling shelter for homeless women and children and transformed it into one of the nation’s beacons of success by actively addressing and overcoming the root causes of their homelessness.

Her written work has been published in the Washington Post, USA Today, Newsweek, and the New York Post. And now Michele is an Independent Women's Forum Visiting Fellow.

1) Talk to us about how tackling the Homelessness issue became a passion for you?
2) You wrote a book on homelessness, called Answers Behind the Red Door: Battling the Homeless Epidemic. What is the meaning behind the title, and what led you to write it?  
3) Your book talks a lot about the underlying issues of homelessness. What does this mean?  What are they?
-The nexus between our issues is freedom and what happens to people when we restrict it. Homelessness policy under a sweeping change instituted by the Obama Administration straightjackets the homeless in dependency. The org Michele built and her life's work since is about creating policy that liberates the homeless to become all they are designed to be.
4) In the last decade, homelessness has become a major issue for our country. Do you agree, and if so, why?  
5) Why has California been particularly hard hit?
6) Portland and Seattle, in addition to San Francisco and Los Angeles, also seem to be overwhelmed by these issues.  Why?
7) I have seen mixed reports on homelessness among families. HUD often reports that it is going down, but I see other articles referencing a stark rise in family homelessness. Why?
8) What do you hope to accomplish during your Visiting Fellowship with IWF?

Danielle M. Smith is an award-winning veteran journalist with over a decade of experience working in national news and gospel radio. Smith shines as a part-time on-air talent at Power 1360 WGBN where she hosts “Good News” a show that spotlights local and national change agents making a positive impact in the Western Pennsylvania region.  

Before “Good News with Danielle Smith” show on radio, it debuted on PCTV’s community access station in 30-minute segments anchored by Danielle.

Smith also hosted for nine years “Hot or Not” a show that spotlighted local and national Gospel/Christian artists. Smith is also an account executive for WGBN, selling air-time spots to businesses and churches.

Smith is a former national Audio Journalist with Sheridan Broadcasting Networks and American Urban Radio Networks. Her responsibilities were interviewing individuals for news stories involving the African-American community, including political figures, celebrities, and notable activists. Smith has been recognized for her stellar reporting work. She was awarded the Robert L. Vann Media Award for Radio/Public Affairs feature story, “Sister Friend Provides Feminine Care Products to Homeless Women.” (2017). Smith is also an awardee of the New Pittsburgh Courier 2016 Women of Excellence.

In 2013, Danielle received the Community Spirit Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism from North Side Institutional Church.  In 2012, Smith teamed with other members of the AURN newsroom to win a Robert L. Vann Award for excellence (Voting Rights Series) from the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation (PBMF).

Danielle’s also a member of PBMF and participated in their Frank Bolden Urban Journalism workshop as a high school student. Smith is a former contributing writer for the Soul Pitt Media quarterly magazine. She’s also a Communications board member for the Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti, a Christian nonprofit organization that provides health, hope, educational guidance and evangelism to Haitians in Haiti.

Danielle earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Broadcasting from Point Park University (Pittsburgh, PA).
