As a young man, John Dowland worked for the English ambassador in Paris  when negotiations were in progress for the marriage of Elizabeth I to the Duke of Anjou and Alençon. He was referred to as "the frog" and, amazingly, the negotiations came to nothing. It appears that it was poor Alençon who was referred to in the title of this wonderful galliard, the style of which is French-influenced. Dowland used the same tune for the song Now, O now, I needs must part.

"Orlando Sleepeth" is a lute piece attributed to John Dowland (1563–1626), one of the most renowned English composers and lutenists of the late Renaissance. However, the piece's origins are somewhat debated, as some sources suggest it may have been composed by another lutenist, possibly Francis Cutting.

Musical and Historical Context
The piece is believed to be inspired by Orlando Furioso, the famous epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto (1532), which was widely popular in Elizabethan England. The title suggests a moment of rest or reflection for Orlando, the poem’s hero.

It is written in a lively courante style, a dance form that was common in the Renaissance and early Baroque periods.
