There must be several million people who know that ‘Maa Mati Manush’ happens to be the name of a Jatra that ran successfully during the 1974-75 season. Several millions saw it. A few millions still live on. Produced by Natta Company – a leading Jatra troupe with its origins in Barishal – Maa Mati Manush was written by Bhairab Gangopadhyay, and directed by Arun Dasgupta. It ran for more than one season and travelled to all parts of West Bengal, and the Bengali-dominated regions of Assam and Tripura. Such was the commercial viability of the production that Megaphone Record published its audio version as a double LP set. It was released in 1976, two years after the Jatra premiered. It was the first double LP set of any Jatra for that matter, and the last one too, for your record.

ভৈরব গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় (ইংরেজি: Bhairav Gangopadhyay) (২৫ নভেম্বর, ১৯৩৪ - ২৮ ডিসেম্বর, ১৯৯৮) একজন বিশিষ্ট দরদী মনের মরমী যাত্রা পালাকার। তিনি যাত্রাপালার প্রযোজক-নির্দেশক, গীতিকার ও সুরকারও ছিলেন।

ভৈরব গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় জন্ম (২৫ নভেম্বর ১৯৩৪) ব্রিটিশ ভারতের অধুনা পশ্চিমবঙ্গের পূর্ব বর্ধমান জেলার মন্তেশ্বর থানার 'মূল' গ্রামে। মূলগ্রামেই তিনি অষ্টম শ্রেণী পর্যন্ত পড়াশোনা করেন। তবে কিশোর বয়স থেকে বাংলার গ্রামে অনুষ্ঠিত যাত্রার প্রতি প্রেম ও নিষ্ঠা তাঁকে যাত্রাশিল্পে আকৃষ্ট করেছিল। ১৯৬০ খ্রিস্টাব্দেই কলকাতার চিৎপুরের যাত্রাপালা জগতে প্রবেশ করেন। তার রচিত প্রথম যাত্রাপালা "নাচমহল" মঞ্চস্থ করে 'সত্যম্বর অপেরা'। প্রথম লেখা যাত্রাপালাতেই তিনি দর্শকদের সমাদর পান। এরপর একে একে বহু যাত্রাপালা রচনা করেন। তার রচিত যাত্রাপালার সংখ্যা প্রায় আড়াই-শো। পালা রচনার পাশাপাশি তিনি নির্দেশনার কাজেও হাত দেন। ১৯৮৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে তিনি নিজের নামে দল "ভৈরব অপেরা" গঠন করে প্রযোজনাও করেছেন। দরদী মনের মানুষ ছিলেন তিনি। গরীব সাধারণ মানুষের কথা, অন্যায় অবিচার অত্যাচারের কথা তার পালা লেখনীতে ফুটে উঠেছে। ভৈরব গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় যেমন একাধারে পালাকার, নির্দেশক ও প্রযোজক ছিলেন তেমনই ছিলেন গীতিকার ও সুরকার।
