Whiteland (3-3) at Mooresville (2-4): Another Mid-State Conference tossup. Whiteland is coming off a 34-22 win over Martinsville as Slate Valentine ran for 119 yards on 30 carries and Ollie Taylor was 6-for-8 passing for 103 yards. Mooresville senior Hogan Denny (1,287 passing yards, 14 TDs; 648 rushing yards, six TDs) is having a monster season. Whiteland 28, Mooresville 26.

Center Grove (5-1) at Pike (1-5): Class 6A No. 2 Center Grove is riding a five-game winning streak after last week’s 31-7 victory over Lawrence Central. Senior Nate Johnson had eight tackles in that win and sophomore Kobe Cherry added seven. Pike has a couple of one-score losses this season or the record could look better. Center Grove 28, Pike 7.

Tri-West (5-1) at North Montgomery (4-2): Class 3A ninth-ranked Tri-West rallied for a 28-21 win over Lebanon last week. In the past three games — wins over Western Boone, Danville and Lebanon — Tri-West quarterback Malachi Walden has 574 rushing yards and four rushing TDs. North Montgomery knocked off Western Boone 20-17 two weeks ago. Tri-West 26, North Montgomery 17.

Lawrence Central (2-4) at North Central (0-6): North Central did put up 274 yards of total offense last week in a 27-6 loss to Carmel, but were hurt by a couple of interceptions and 97 penalty yards. Lawrence Central kept it close with Center Grove for a half in a 31-7 loss. Damarcus Cole had seven catches for 128 yards for the Bears. Lawrence Central 30, North Central 14.

But forfeits issued as punishment for a postgame fight last week between Arbor View and Desert Pines wiped away the slate, bringing new contenders for the game of the week.

While football and golf are quite different, this event can be a little more similar than others, from the raucous atmosphere to the hostility in the us-against-them mentality, and the binary team outcome.

But there’s also a great local rivalry game Friday pitting a red team against a blue team — and in their case, there definitely is not an ocean between the two communities, just mere miles.

So instead of boring you with more Ryder Cup talk — though I’ll certainly be spending some time watching the great event this weekend — here are some predictions for the matches of the football variety to take place locally on Friday.

The blueprint on how to beat Woods Cross (4-2, 2-1 Region 5) lies in the film of the Bonneville-WX game, where the Lakers took away the fullback dive play of the flexbone triple option.

It’s 10 times easier said than done to stop the Wildcats’ ground game, but Roy (4-2, 2-1) has enough to make it happen and also score some points for itself.

Royals quarterback Dru Gardner quietly had his best game of the year last week against Bonneville, completing 10 of 11 passes for 229 yards and one score.

The stakes for this game are big. The winner stays within a game of Box Elder at the top (should Box Elder win), and the loser could fall two games back of first place with three games left.

It’s always a fun night when two of the original high schools in Southern Nevada reunite for a game, and arguably, Las Vegas and Basic are two of the most historic institutions. Many games were played in the 1950s, 60s and beyond once Basic opened in Henderson during World War II. 

I remember a game in the early 2000s, when Cliff Frazier’s Basic Wolves gave the state power Las Vegas Wildcats an unexpected close game. Chris Montano — still the best athlete I’ve covered in more than 25 years on the job — was an underclassman and put up a great fight. Las Vegas, like they did every Friday night back then, found a way to win.
