"Puss In Boots: The Last Wish" has been one of the great success stories of 2022. Released near the end of the year with mild expectations, the film exceeded them in every single way, with audiences and critics responding rapturously to the film's characters, story, action, humor, and animation. Director Joel Crawford and Producer Mark Swift are riding high with nearly half a billion in box office receipts and an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Skwigly.com presents Animation One-To-Ones featuring Martyn Warren in conversation with Walt Dohrn, discussing the latest chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s blockbuster musical franchise: 'Trolls Band Together'. 

The third film in the series continues the adventures of Poppy, played by Anna Kendrick, and Branch, played by Justin Timberlake, now a couple, and the emotional journey they embark upon to reunite Branch with his brothers, who once made up the boyband phenomenon BroZone.

Trolls Band Together is steered by returning director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay, and is co-directed by Tim Heitz (head of story, 'Trolls World Tour'). Dohrn’s other credits include directing roles on the first two Trolls films as well as the Shrek short films 'Donkey’s Christmas Shrektacular' and 'Shrek’s Yule Log', alongside work as a story artist, layout artist, character designer, writer and voice actor.

'Trolls Band Together' is out in UK cinemas now, with a US release to follow on November 17th.

✨PIED PIPER'S ALTERNATE UNIVERSE STORY✨

Pied Piper uses his magical flute, he always has, but would never dare to mute or talk about the ‘Spell’ he was given. Imagine, being able to hear everything anyone is saying fairy tale's from the past. Maybe if he’d learnt to block people out or had someone to guide him he could’ve managed his magical flute better but how he could barely understand how fairytale creatures powers to begin with, let alone how to control them. And so Pied Piper put up with it, keeping his flute, luring the rats, not paying him and luring the children away of the town of Hamelin. 

That was until he overheard a conversation and learned that the plan would fail. Though I'm not referencing the conversation you think I am, no, Pied Piper has known the magic would fail for a long time. He heard it when Rumpel hired him in the first place. From that moment forward Pied Piper saw a chance at honesty and set in motion a plan to ensure Rumpel's plan came true and his life is freedom. Finally a chance at loyalty. 

So he bides his time, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce, all the while ignoring ogres to scare the villagers. That moment came when Shrek causing him to wish life was back to the way it used to be, back when he was feared and hated and Pied Piper made his first move, revealing that before he rescued Fiona. From there he began sowing seeds of doubt and bitterness throughout the kingdom. Moving next to Rumpel, mentioning that he hired him, causing him to doubt his course of action in hiring him to further shake him and the villagers. Finally his biggest move yet, revealing making the ogres danced with his magical flute. Surely this would bring under his spell. Watching the chaos ensue as Shrek trying to kiss Fiona and True Love's Kiss was supposed to fix everything. And, at long last, he got what he wanted. True love didn't get Fiona out of that tower, Shrek was never born, Harold and Lillian ultimately signed over their kingdom to Rumpel in exchange for Fiona - the moment they finish, Rumpel’s promise that all their problems would disappear turns out to have been a flip that they themselves would disappear and he had a moment of silence.. 

For the first time since Pied Piper was arrived for Rumpel's palace. He could finally seen and hear himself again. Until Shrek didn’t change their perception by saving Fiona and stopping Farquaad, Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming, not only would Rumpel have taken over the kingdom, but fairytale creatures would’ve been treated even worse and used as slaves. No, no, no! He’d done everything right, finally everything was as it always should’ve been. He wouldn’t go back, couldn't go back. And in his agony a new power and his magical flute emerged...

Rule the Quiet (Pied Piper's Alternate Universe Song)

"The Wild Robot" had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received enthusiastic reviews, with many claiming it was not only the best-animated film of the year but that it was one of the best-animated films ever made by Dreamworks Animation. Director/Writer Chris Sanders and Academy Award-winning star Lupita Nyong'o were both kind enough to spend a few moments speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. ✨RITA'S VILLAIN STORY✨

There once lived a poor yet tough-as-nails sewer rat named Rita, who serves as Roddy's way to get home. When Roddy arrives in the sewer city, he is directed by an elderly pirate cook to Rita and her ship, The Jammy Dodger. Roddy at first thinks she is a male captain, but she corrects him when he calls her "Mister Captain Skipper Thingy" with Miss Captain Skipper Thingy. At first, she was mesmerised by what she saw, but there was a darkness in the air, a quiet chaos in the very ground, almost as if the sewers was living, breathing. 

Rita’s wonder slowly turned to a growing unease. She began to find herself doing and saying things the past Rita wouldn’t have dreamed of, as whispers in her ear tempted her towards a new version of herself, scrambling her thoughts. It was almost as if the sewer city of London itself was infecting her with its madness. One moment, she was the sardonic and strong girl from her life, and the next, she was a twisted reflection of herself. Her laughter became a cackle, her smile a smirk, and her once-bright eyes glinted with a sinister light. Desperate to get back home and return to her normal self, Rita frantically searched for a way out. But each step forward seemed to pull her deeper into the clutches of sewer city of London’s madness.

In the depths of the Sewer City, she met The Toad, who eyed her with a knowing look.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I... I don’t know anymore,” Rita replied, her voice a mixture of confusion and despair. “I need to find my way home.”

Rita’s desperation grew as she felt herself almost split in two, watching this darker version of herself slowly take over. If she could just find her way home before the Sewer City version of herself took full control, then the nightmare would finally be over. But Rita couldn’t have possibly known just how deep the sewers’ roots were inside her. Sure, she could leave the sewer city of London, but sewer city of London was never going to truly leave her ever again.

✨CHEL'S VILLAIN STORY✨
Chel watch as their loved ones disappear one after another, their numbers dwindle and hope has long faded. Loss is something we all must go through but when it becomes an almost weekly occurrence Chel knows something must be done. 

She begins her research, trying to understand the connection between humans and fairies. Maybe there was a way to sever the connection? To allow people to exist independent of Mesoamerican ball game, but that would be impossible. Chel tests many different theories to try and allow people to let them live, but everytime she comes up blank. And as the weeks and months go by, Chel's bitterness towards the human race grows and grows. It simply isn't fair.

Until one fateful day, Chel comes up with one last theory… then maybe, just maybe. If Chel could ensure the child connected to her never lost faith, the children connected to her friends never lost faith, then she could at least keep herself and her loved ones alive. And so on their next trip to the mainland Chel convinces Tulio and Miguel to follow her plan, to win , take them away from their homes and bring them up in El Dorado. 

And so, they left, went over the El Dorado and clinging to this final sliver of hope. They searched for hours with no luck, all seemed lost, how could they possible tell which child was theirs? That was until Chel felt a inexplicable pull to a window. And inside the window, no more than a few years old and she knew they'd done it. Tulio and Miguel with a new surge of hope find their humans in the next few hours.

Everything was going well, Chel, Tulio and Miguel were safe, until some strangers arrived in El Dorado and put everything she’s worked so hard to protect at risk. Tzekel-Kan, with his fixation on human sacrifices What if they decided to go back with him? What if they decided to give up by himself? It was something Chel simply couldn't allow, and so to protect her, Tulio and Miguel she would see Tzekel-Kan fall.

Fall Little Wendy Bird Fall (Chel's Villain Song)

✨POPPY'S VILLAIN SONG✨

What if the tale was rewritten? What if Poppy’s sacrifice to Branch was in vain? What if, instead of forfeiting his own life for Poppy's, Branch’s was blinded by bitterness over Poppy's betrayal? Abandoning her to an eternity in the underworld, while he found another, less altruistic way to ascend to godhood and spent his own eternity amongst the immortals, sitting comfortably beside his father, in a throne of his own. What then happens to Poppy? What does she become?… 

Well that is indeed how our tale differs from the original. After being abandoned by Branch and left for dead, Poppy finds herself floating down the river. The final resting place for the lost souls of the dead, who are doomed to repeat their worst moments in life over and over again, until all the life is drained from them.

Poppy never lost her desire to live though, it burned brightly like a flame that could not be extinguished, fuelled by the hatred she had for the Bergens eat trolls during the Trollstice Feast alike who had treated her life as a means to an end. 

Every memory she relived added to the fire, Her first love leaving her, Chef Bergen manipulating and holding her soul ransom, and the worst, Branch leaving her under that pillar to die, knowing that every time she called to him, he had heard but had not answered. All these memories fuelled her rage until it burned so hot, the river itself seemed to boil around her.

Bergens Guards, the guards of the castle through the rivers, noticed this anger and plucked her from the waters. No one usually makes it this long in the river. And so Poppy made a deal with the Ferrymen, who told her the secret of the gods immortality and how to take it for her own, in exchange for a seat in her new pantheon.

Armed with forbidden knowledge, Poppy steals Chef Bergen life essence from her, gaining her powers and leaving what remained of his rotting soul to join the waters of the river. 

We meet Poppy after these events as she introduces herself to her subjects as the new queen of the Bergen Town. Here she outlines her plan to take control, the underworld was just the beginning, she would topple the very mountain of Troll Village, taking an army of the undead with her to kill Branch and any other trolls that would stand in her way.

She will strip them of their power, make it her own and punish them for meddling with the lives of mortals for “sport”. 

But absolute power corrupts absolutely, and with Poppy heading up a new pantheon of Trolls, a cycle already seen with the titans, will surely start again. Poppy plans to take power and she plans on keeping it…
