This is a song I wrote in two sessions (that's how they usually go). The choruses and verses were written in one sitting (I find those are the easiest to write), and then I made the bridge about a week later.

The day after Ghost’s Skeletá album was released, I was struck by a bit of inspiration while listening to “Guiding Lights” on a 3-hour drive home from a football game. I pulled over in the small town of Truro at close to 9pm, and sent my friend Katie (who I met at Ghost’s 2023 Melbourne concert, by the way) a bunch of voice messages through Instagram. I suggested that we collaborate and record an acoustic cover of Guiding Lights, as a duet. She got on board, and our collab began! 7 months later (after many delays and hurdles along the way), it’s finally complete and I couldn’t be more proud of it. My talented cousin Craig mastered the track for me, turning the mix I was already super stoked with into something truly magical!

Katie and Craig both happen to reside in Canberra (just by total coincidence), and I’m in regional South Australia so a lot of stuff had to be done long distance. Files were flying back and forth through cyberspace, and we finally ended up with a finished song.

This stripped-back version of the tune sounds so simple, but I found it surprisingly challenging to learn on guitar. Also I hadn’t played at all for a very long time, so my fingers were baby soft. Ouch! After restringing my Maton, I pretty much taught myself the song bit by bit while I was recording it. I had to use a whole bunch of tracks and piece certain bits together, because of the nature of the song (and how much I suck at guitar). I proudly used my grandpa’s tambourine on this track too!

Once I’d recorded enough of it, I started sending audio files to Katie in Canberra, so she could start recording her vocals. Lucky for me, Katie not only has an amazing voice, but an excellent grasp of harmonies. Very little coaching or mucking around had to be done, which made my job pretty easy when it came to editing and mixing our vocal tracks. When my toiling was finally complete, I sent it off to Craig who eventually worked his magic. I can’t believe how loud, clear and luscious the end result turned out!

Katie and I filmed a heap of footage of ourselves, which I spent a LONG time sorting and editing into a music video (there was a HEAP to choose from). This is an actual serious project, but Katie and I are both reasonably silly people, and that silliness definitely crept its way into the vid. Check it out on YouTube:

I’m a former drummer of ANNOYING L.I.F.E. and still play at home on a Roland e-drum (after years with a Mapex double-bass kit). I also use a keyboard – just enough to record the melodies that come to my mind.

Most of my tracks start as 2–10 minute live recordings of my own compositions. I never learned proper keyboard playing; I just use it to express ideas. I deliberately record the raw sound with a Zoom H2n above the keyboard, because that captures the real character of my playing – something line-out or MIDI can’t reproduce.

I upload this recording to Suno, use the Cover mode, and usually set the “Audio Influence” to around 70–80 % so the original structure stays recognizable. The AI adds layers and polish, but the core melody, rhythm and feel come from my recording. To me, Suno works like my own band: I provide the idea, and the AI helps shape the result. That’s why these AI-assisted songs feel very personal to me – they start with melodies I invent myself.

All covers and remakes are based solely on my own ideas. No outside songs, no borrowed melodies.

I'll try and keep this short...

I was born in Loxton on February 4th, 1981 into a pretty musical family. My grandpa was a singer, my dad is a singer/guitarist and my older brother is also a singer/guitarist. It was only fitting (and hardly surprising) that I followed in their footsteps.

I've been playing the guitar for pretty much as long as I can remember, and I really should be a lot better at it by now, but I just don't practice! Naughty me! I also started singing when I was about 18 or so (when I finally got the courage to do it). As well as guitar, I'm also pretty handy on bass, drums and keyboard. I also shake a pretty mean tambourine!

Over the years I've been in a few bands, starting with the infamous "Fat Ankles" in year 8 at Loxton High with my mates Juice, Romers and Goodo. After High School came "Dead Panda Sandals" (later re-named to "The Loose Cannons") and then a couple of years later I joined "Sector 7G", which became a big passion of mine. We did pretty well for four local boys... we released two CDs, had airtime on Adelaide radio, made a few DVDs, played plenty of Adelaide gigs, did some festivals with big-name bands, got write-ups in magazines, etc. The G lasted 5 years, but unfortunately, all good things come to an end.

For over seven years now I've been in my current band "The Door Snakes" with my mates Gogs & Diamond Dave. We enjoy immense popularity locally, and our public Loxton shows are always chockas! We're a cover band, and I like to think we play a pretty vast range of songs, that pretty much everyone can enjoy. If you haven't experienced the craziness of a Loxton Door Snakes show, then I thoroughly recommend it!

In the last few years I have bought some really cool recording gear, and made myself a nice little studio in my house. Using results from a brief online poll among my friends, I named it "Suck My Studio"... classy, eh! Thanks to a lot of help from Wattsy (my studio guru), I'm now reasonably handy with Pro Tools, and have recorded quite a few songs.

I'm a very busy chap, and unfortunately I hardly find the time to get into my studio. Hopefully I can slink in there a lot more this year somehow! The tunes I've recorded so far have mainly been silly songs, cover tracks, or tunes written specially for mates. These songs have been really good opportunities to gain experience with the software, hardware, microphones, recording processes, etc. But I guess you could say I'm still yet to "get serious" and record some original Tristan Kemp masterpieces. I now feel I have enough experience in the studio to start doing this!

I enjoy having mates around to record stuff in my studio. Some mates have "guest starred" on songs with me, and other mates have used the studio to record their own stuff. The single aim of having the studio there is to have fun. It's a cool hobby! And I don't plan to profit from any of the music I make... in fact, I plan to upload all my songs so that people can listen to them for free. Careful though... some of the songs contain some naughty language!

I don't have any limits when it comes to songs I record... nor do I take myself too seriously. I'm a metalhead at heart, but I also have a good sense of humour... so expect everything from epic metal masterpieces, to silly jingles, to comedy tunes, to cover songs, to ballads, to dance tracks!!! Yes... I have many plans! Tee hee hee!

I'm currently doing an ongoing awesome project with Juice (my old school buddy and former Fat Ankles bandmate) called "STUTAP". It stands for "Slave To Uncle Tom's Appetite for Poundcake". Great name, eh! If you're a fan of 80's metal, you should be able to pick out the four song/album names we pinched to come up with our name. He admires legends such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan for their storytelling prowess, while also drawing inspiration from the melodic genius of Billy Joel and the powerful anthems of Journey and Van Halen. Furthermore, the innovative sounds of electronic pop icons like Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode can be felt in his work. This fusion of genres reflects Paulo's ability to connect with a diverse audience and create music that resonates on multiple levels.

In addition to his solo pursuits, Paulo has collaborated with fellow musician iGracie to write songs for various bands, including the country outfit Devils and Debutantes and the indie rock group Love Bomb Poets Society. These partnerships have allowed him to explore different musical styles and expand his songwriting repertoire, blending heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies that appeal to listeners across genres.
