Today marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, the day that I walked out of my house to see a biblical level flood engulf the city I had moved to only 5.5 months prior. 

I watched in awe as cars, rooftops, and a swath of miscellaneous debris fluidly made its way down a colossal river that looked like molten clay.

And while the impact of that moment was enormous on my spirit and my psyche, it was nothing compared to the gradual unraveling of my life that occurred in the months to follow.

It’s hard to explain living through a natural disaster. It’s a really surreal experience.

These transpersonal events take place within the context of already complex personal realities.

If I’m being honest, it felt like an act of God, a brutal metaphysical clearing of the life that I was desperately trying to hold together but didn’t know how to keep from falling apart.

I’m still picking up the pieces of the life that fell apart after the storm, attempting to make sense of the drastic upheaval that followed it.

Thankfully, there has been a lot of grace in the wake of that fateful moment, and myself and my family are both safe and provided for in all ways.

There is a certain poetic perfection to the way that things have unfolded since then.

At times, it has been incredibly challenging.

At others, it has felt joyful.

If nothing else, it certainly makes for a fascinating story, and I happen to be a storyteller.

So here is my attempt to tell that story.

‘Picking Up the Pieces’ is the 2nd single off of the forthcoming ‘After The Storm’ album that I co-created with my friend and producer Rob Lenfestey, who also lived through the Hurricane.

Together we are weaving a 7 track narrative that tells a story of devastation, overcoming, redemption, and resurrection.

Our prayer is that it serves as a guiding light for others navigating their own storms.
