A Fleeting Point In Terrifying Beauty is a darkly, expansive album of original, experimental post-rock music, developed and led by acclaimed composer-producer, Jo Wills.

The product of ten years of musical practice, rumination and mental and spiritual honing on the part of its creator Jo Wills aka Point Contact, A Fleeting Point In Terrifying Beauty is both mobile and monumental, a huge analogue sculpture of heavy guitars, electronics, dark Ambient and percussion. In its foreboding but ravishing elemental approach it reminds of the harsh stone brilliance of Ben Frost, the horizon stretch of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the ritualistic, dry ice solemnity of Sunn O))). Further than that, however, it evokes a sense of the natural, brutal beauty of Britain, from the ancient landscapes of Somerset to hulking grey power stations. 

Wills’ ambitions echo those of Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese in some respects – to convey a sense of the universe in which we are insignificant specks, mere witnesses to its volatile wondrousness, as on ‘Hold Cloud’, with its stony, fetid landscape strafed with pterodactyl-like shrieks of feedback . With one exception, the tracks on A Fleeting Point… are without vocals, dehumanised arrangements of brilliantly wrought slabs of sound. “The music is organic, almost entirely analogue, using feedback and saturation as tools for organic growth, creating sound that is always moving, responding and developing,” says Wills.” The opener ‘1st’, begins with a low, stirring rumble, a moment of pre-creation, before the drums impact and guitars tear up the fabric of nothingness and every pixel of the soundscape is blackened with action.

A Fleeting Point In Terrifying Beauty is, in every sense, a colossal achievement, a sort of imaginary edifice carved in stone and metal, created from gas and liquid, designed to create a bridge between the human imagination and our planetary surroundings, that invites both wonderment and a desire for full immersion.

Andrea Righi is a cultural theorist and professor of European studies and Italian at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Righi is author of Three Economies of Transcendence; The Other Side of the Digital: The Sacrificial Economy of New Media; and coeditor with Cesare Casarino of Another Mother: Diotima and the Symbolic Order of Italian Feminism.

Michael Lewis is senior lecturer in philosophy at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and editor of the Journal of Italian Philosophy.
