A gruesome battle to the death must have a fitting soundtrack, no? 
Music is one of the key contributors to the soundscape and overall emotional effect of a video game. The following pieces attempt to capture the peculiar musical style that highlights the feeling of being a character in a fictional world, fighting a final boss, or meleeing dragons. The wonderful instrument that is the piano also plays a role in all of these pieces.
“Iron Lotus”- Is originally a song written by Mili for the Korean strategy-based game Library of Ruina, set in a dystopia. This cover features vocals and a virtuosic piano arrangement with a focus on complex harmonies that have a slight jazzy twinge.
“Unknown Boss Theme”- A dark and spooky piece composed for piano trio and percussion that spotlights the rich timbre of the cello. Inspired by the grand orchestral pieces of Monster Hunter World.
“Just a Childhood Dream”- The nostalgic sounds of a music box and fleeting interludes paint the picture of a young protagonist having the adventure of a lifetime. The world of video games is an extension of the world of dreams and imagination.

This track was inspired by the theme "The Far Reaches" and an image provided. The piece is meant to depict a journey to a faraway land and consists of 4 distinct sections - the start of your journey, leaving your hometown, leaving your last familiar environment, and arriving at your destination.

When making the track, I visualised this as an RPG where you start out a long journey with cutscenes and visuals of your final destination, followed by leaving your hometown into the wider world. After a long period of travelling, you enter an environment where the last traces of familiarity are gone. Things are unfamiliar and cold, yet not hostile. Finally, you arrive at your destination.

In every part of the journey, I chose to either change the energy of the music or the timbre of the instruments being played in order to convey the main emotions associated with the different parts of a long journey like this.

Music was made with a combination of standard orchestral instruments and some instruments from my culture that I used to play.

Delilah Velvet is a freelance composer, performer, and musical director,  writing bespoke music for short films, animations, promotional videos, vlogs, podcasts, and DnD campaigns. In addition, she has written for concerts performed by prestigious ensembles including Juice Vocal Ensemble, the Vasara String Quartet, and the Darwin Bio Orchestra project, at locations including the 606 Jazz Club, the Royal College of Music, and the Elgar Rooms in the Royal Albert Hall.

She has studied composition and recorder at the Royal College of Music JD in London, and Japanese and music at Durham University. Currently, she is studying for MMus in Ethnomusicology and Composition at Royal Holloway University of London, and teaching technology-based composition in primary schools. She has worked as composer and Musical Director for the Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre’s David Copperfield, Macbeth, and Ghetto, composer for Misshapen Chaos’s DNA.
