It’s been exactly one year since we interviewed Man Power for our MixedBy series. Since then, The Me Me Me founder has launched himself back into the world, returning to some form of normalcy post-COVID. The British maestro is back to throwing regular gigs in his home base of Newcastle and is touring once again, bringing his world-renowned DJ sets back to the masses.

To mark his welcomed return, Man Power has partnered with Finnish imprint Echocentric Records to release his first vinyl record of the year! Titled “Space Walk,” this EP contains a total of 3-tracks and sees Man Power in his element dishing out his signature sounds that have been labeled as ‘intergalactic house.’ However, in his latest rendition, the beats have more of a tribal feeling – resembling something closer to home than some of his extraterrestrial belters.

Case and point, we are premiering the A2 from the record titled “What a Puny Plan.” Like most dance tracks of this variety, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on the track's name, but instead, concentrate on its melodies. The song grabs your attention immediately with its gyrating bassline and almost ancestral-sounding percussion. This gives the listener the feeling as if an ancient ritual is about to take place and that Man Power is the shaman leading the procession. Man Power then continues to layer in waves of ethereal synths over menacing horns that give the tune some much-needed gravity – compelling the dancefloor to come together and groove as one. “What a Puny Plan” might be the closest thing you’ll come to having a religious experience at the club and we’re ready to repent for our sins!

2024 has been a big year for Geoff Kirkwood, better known as Man Power. With huge EPs released on labels like Rekids, Make A Dance, Hypercolour, Sound As, and Me Me Me, he’s been as prolific as ever. In addition, he was invited to deliver both the RA Podcast and the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, just two months apart.

Kirkwood has also launched his own venue, Are You Affiliated, in North Shields, where he’s hosted standout acts such as Caribou, Optimo, and Gerd Janson. On the DJ circuit, he’s been seen playing back-to-back sets alongside heavyweights like Skream, Special Request, La La, Daniel Avery, Ewan McVicar, Artwork, and Erol Alkan.

Globally, he’s returned to an intense touring schedule, gracing stages across Europe, the US, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Highlights include playing at Berghain’s iconic Lab.Oratory, Hi Ibiza, and DJ Harvey’s Klymax club in Bali.

With a new FM radio residency, an upcoming nationwide UK tour, and an Ibiza residency soon to be announced, 2024 is shaping up to be a monumental year for Man Power.

Scottish producer Callum Nixon, known as Planar Traits, continues to forge a unique path in electronic music with his latest EP, Frequency Slip, on Echocentric Records. From his base in Stockholm, Nixon has garnered acclaim for his conceptual approach, blending introspective atmospheres with high-energy functionality. Following the meditative explorations of his 2021 release Portal Vision, this new three-track collection deepens his signature style, with the title track delivering a hypnotic yet dancefloor-ready experience.

The title track, Frequency Slip, is an intricate journey through sound and emotion, seamlessly merging hypnotic rhythms with a darker undertone. Built on a foundation of undulating basslines and precise percussive patterns, the track creates an immediate sense of propulsion. Its proggy, groove-led structure is designed for the dancefloor, yet its layered textures and nuanced progression reveal a depth that rewards closer listening.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.
