Eric Newman and Kate Wolf speak to the author Kristin Ross about her recent book, The Politics and Poetics of Everyday Life, a collection of essays that examine how everyday life emerges as a vantage point for understanding and transforming our social world. The book represents three decades of Ross's writing about the everyday in French political, social, and cultural theory and history, including the commune form and current autonomous zones in France, the romance and memory of the May 1968 protests, and the present predicaments both faced and created by the Macron government. Featuring a long interview with the pioneering philosopher Henri Lefebvre, the book also invokes the work of Frederic Jameson, Jacques Ranciere, Emile Zola, and many others, to explore the intersections of political transformation and cultural representation as resources for thinking opposition and liberation in the present.
Plus, artist Martine Syms, whose new exhibition Loser Back Home is currently on view at Spruth Magers in Los Angeles, returns to recommend Steffani Jemison's novel A Rock, A River, A Street.

Jamais n’aurait-on eu autant besoin de pamphlétaires à la Émile Zola à la place des sténographes qui pullulent dans nos grands et médiocres médias occidentaux. 

Quand Israël proclame urbi e orbi qu’il commettra un génocide contre les Palestiniens, nos dirigeants politiques répondent à l’unisson : Israël a le droit de se défendre. 

Quand nous nous indignons, on nous répond : condamnez-vous le Hamas?

Imaginons un instant ce que dirait Zola devant ce massacre annoncé et exécuté.

Il adresserait son « J’accuse » à Joseph Robinette Biden, président de la République des États-Unis. Car c’est sous son règne et sa direction que « un tel crime » est commis. Il le ferait car ce serait son « devoir de parler », de « ne pas être complice » et de ne pas voir « ses nuits hantées » par le spectre des enfants, femmes et hommes innocents tués. 

Il décortiquerait méthodiquement le rôle de Washington et de ses alliés – valets – dans la création et le renforcement militaire de cet État d’Israël dans le but de dominer toute la région de l’Ouest de l’Asie et du Nord de l’Afrique. Il démontrerait en détail comment Washington a toujours empêché l’ONU d’appliquer le droit international et les centaines de résolutions visant à contenir l’État d’Israël et à défendre les droits des Palestiniens. 

Pas dupe de la posture d’arbitre impartiale qu’essaie d’adopter le tandem Biden-Blinken devant les déclarations et actes outranciers d’Israël, qui dépassent l’entendement, Zola irait droit au « vrai crime », « à l’épouvantable déni de justice » dont les États-Unis et ses États vassaux sont malades, et coupables : leur acharnement à poursuivre, contre la volonté de la majorité de l’humanité, l’entreprise coloniale européenne qu’on pensait défaite pour toujours. Il démontrerait que Netanyahou n’est que la partie tranchante de leur épée maintes fois utilisée en Afrique, en Asie et en Amérique latine.

Pas dupe non plus de la « pause humanitaire » et de l’échange des otages, Zola aurait disséqué ce « saugrenu roman-feuilleton » rédigé par et pour Washington pour les faire coïncider avec le « Thanksgiving » américain et pour renforcer la suprématie de l’empire sur la région par le truchement du Qatar, ce fantoche qui a bien voulu accepter d’accueillir le bureau politique du Hamas pour éviter qu’il s’installe à Damas ou à Téhéran. 

Il ne succomberait non plus aux larmes versées pour certains otages et qui saturent nos médias, mais refusées pour les centaines de femmes et enfants palestiniens dont la liberté aura été volée pendant tant d’années. 

Mais surtout, Zola mettra au grand jour l’objectif du président Joseph Robinette Biden à l’égard de la Palestine et des Palestiniens. Tant qu’il est maître de la situation, il n’y aura pas d’État palestinien libre et indépendant. Tout au plus, ce sera un département d’Israël où sévira un apartheid assumé, sans armée, sans banque centrale, sans contrôle sur ses ressources, sans pouvoir de signer des traités et de décider de sa politique étrangère. 

Zola terminerait sa lettre comme il l’a terminée en 1898 : 

« Quand on enferme la vérité sous terre, elle s’y amasse, elle y prend force telle d’explosion, que, le jour où elle éclate, elle fait tout sauter avec elle.  On verra bien si l’on ne vient pas de préparer, pour plus tard, le plus retentissant des désastres. »
